Remove the throttle body. Spray inside with carb cleaner. Wipe. Repeat until spotless.

The problem usually occurs because the butterfly valve that is electronically operated either a) sticks, or b) positions itself in the idle position, but crap stops air from getting through.

Don't get carb cleaner on anything painted or plastic.

you dont say which engine it is. the throttle body is part of the air intake after the air filter, it's where the air intake tube connects towards the engine, check the online manuals in the sticky at the top of the thread list for pictures etc.
it it's a 1.6 and there is a rattling noise on cold startups then its the dephaser issue.

If its not the connector under the seat its likely to be the airbag spool. If your steeling wheel makes any sort of clicking noise when you're turning it then it could be that.

If anyone else has the same problem don't assume it is TDC sensor or throttle housing as it could also be Camshaft sensor which is more likely. When my TDC sensor went the car died completely. It was caput and I had to get it recovered.

The Camshaft sensor causes problems trying to started and it can also drain your battery when its knackered but you can after many attempts and much praying eventually get it started. You have to rev it for a big to allow the engine to get warm. Switching off the AC is a good idea because it could immediately stall again having to also power compressor straight away.

When my Camshaft sensor had gone I could still drive places but there was a danger of it stalling so I had to constantly keep reving it up especially when stationary so it didn't stall. I usually had it around 1500 rpm while stationary. I didn't dare go much lower than that. It was a compromise from annoying to many other motorists and stalling and trying to get it going again which could be quite embarassing depending on where it happens.
