Whining noise when the air-conditioning is engaged 2005 2.0

Postby ajgoodfellow » Mon Jul 05, 2010 4:53 pm

Hi all,

I've had my Megane for about 18 months now and apart from a few small problems (like the passenger door electric window motor giving up) it's been fine (touch wood!)

About a week ago I noticed a rather loud whining noise which varied with engine revs but it seemed to be independent of the gear I'm in or engine load. When I turn off the air-conditioning the noise disappears immediately but returns with a few seconds of the air-conditioning being re-engaged

Apart from this the car runs fine. There are no warning lights, power seems good and fuel economy is as it's always been. I had a major service in February (cam belt, water pump, tensioners, spark plugs, etc) and I had the air-con re-gassed at a Renault garage about 6 weeks ago (took advantage of their offer)

The air-conditioning works fine when it's engaged on the right hand side - the left vent in the centre console and on the left of the car doesn't get very cold and has far less power than the other two vents

The car is a 2005 Renault Megane Dynamique 2.0 with 39,000 miles

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? At a complete guess I thought perhaps it was the compressor?

Many thanks,

Alistair

As above have a look at the pump but have the alternator checked at the same time.

As above but also get the belt checked. I'm intrigued by the disparity between the coldness on either side. Check the cabin pollen filter and hoover out the vents with the filter removed (from the filter side).

My air con has started making a noise that varries with revs it started of quiet a few weeks ago but has got lould. When people say to check the oil is this oil in the compressor or just car oil?

Is it best to stop using until fixed?

I wrote a detailed post about this, but the server decided to log me out.

Don't use the A/C until you have taken it to place with the essential kit to test it.

The engine oil and refrigerant oil are entirely separate. You cannot test the A/C system from home.

Hi

When I took my car to have the gas recharged the noise stopped - it therefore could be because the gas is running low

I have not been using it since noise got bad but went to test it today and it not working at all now silent. Where would I take it for someone to have a look at it is there air condioning specalist? When i bought it they had just recharged the gas but I did use it almost everyday in summer.

Just take it to an air conditioning place

It sounds like the gas has gone now - a regas should fix it. Get them to put some dye in the regas to see if it's leaking - it turns out that I have a hole in my compressor which the gas leaks out of
