Broken dipstick

I have a 2005 1.5dci pulled the dipstick (yellow plastic) to check oil and it broke. Most of the bendy bit is still in the metal tube.
How do I get it out and is it dangerous to drive?

Good question. On the 1.9 engine you can unbolt the bottle that retains the dipstick. Probably in that instance you would be able to get hold of the broken end with some long nose pliers.
I think that the layout of the 1.5 is different. Someone will be able to offer an idea as to how to retrieve it.
As for whether it is dangerous to drive - the question is, where did it break off? Near the top you are probably okay - even if it drops to the bottom of the sump it is unlikely to get caught up in the oil pump gears. If you have most of it and the bottom bit snapped off, I would be more cautious. You may have to drain the oil and remove the sump to get it out.

Thanks for advice, the bit I retained was 24cm long. I think there must be another 20cm or so, still stuck in the pipe.
The pipe itself looks as if it might be screwed into the bottom part of the engine - no bolts.
I think you're right though - it's down to a garage, oil out and sump off.
Again thanks

Guys, from my own experience, it is not dangerous to drive. There is no way that the part of deep stick goes away from tube. Buy a spare tube with deep stick (it comes together) and change it. There is one or two screws ...

Dipstick on 1.5dci (05) broke in dipstick holder at top of sump. To get it out I took off the nut holding the tube and then pulled the tube out of the sump. It is only held in by a rubber O ring. A couple of wiggles to loosen it and a careful pull up should bring it out.
