Howling noise
Hi, I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. There is a howling noise when I accelerate, sometimes really loud, sometimes not 2 bad but never used 2 happen. Has anyone got any ideas? Cheers

I think we all know that this is heading toward the turbo.

Yeah it's a diesel.. 1.9dci.
If it was th turbo on it's way out would I not lose boost or have smoke flying out the back??
Cheers for your replies fellas.

Re: Howling noise
If it's making a seriously loud noise, this could be the result of bearing failure and and the rotating parts hitting the casing. Driving the car is asking for trouble (if you are lucky just a new turbo and a thorough clean of all the air pipework including the intercooler etc - think £500). The worst scenario is a total failure which means the engine will run on it's own oil and you will not be able to switch it off resulting in a runaway car - unless you stall it in gear, and a new engine (knackers yard).
That said, it may not be this - it could be loose ducting or something else entirely. Personally, I would have it checked out without driving it any further, just to be on the safe side. Or at the very least, let it idle and set up your phone or similar to record the sound. Blip the throttle several times, and post your sound file on here.

Re: Howling noise
I wouldn't say it's seriously loud, sometimes it's louder than other times but I've noticed that it mainly happens when engine has warmed up, not that noticeable for 1st couple of mins...
Really hope it's not turbo as I'm skint at th moment like!!
If I take it to Renault will they take my eyes out or be reasonable? Was just gonna ask a few questions before committing to any work...

Re: Howling noise
When was the last oil change, and what went in?
You may want to clean the breather system and EGR valve.
Renault will charge silly money. Find a diesel turbo specialist if an oil change and clean up doesn't work.

Re: Howling noise
Ive only had the car a couple of month... ive topped up myself with recommended oil but never changed. how do i clean the breather system and EGR valve? should i do this 1st? if so how much will this cost?
booked in renault for check on thurs but if i can get around them taking my eyes out, this would be great. Nearly £80 for diagnostic!!
Any sugestions or recommendations are more than welcome, cheers.

Re: Howling noise
could possibly be a wheel bearing.
my question is every one says that once the engine runs on sump oil theirs no stopping it. but if neutral is selected and the car is brought to a stop so that the mph reads 0 then the engine stop button can be pressed. all the diesels have an engine shut off valve located in the pipe from the inter-cooler to the intake manifold, this is shut when the stop button is pressed and there for no air to engine and it shuts down safely on its own.
what do your reckon? is this the case.

If it was a wheel bearing would it not be present all the time when wheels are rotating? and not just when accelerating (mainly from 1700 RPM)
Well thats what i was thinking, just dip the clutch, bring it to a hault then press button... in my case it has thankfully not gone that far. (Touch Wood!)
If it was turbo on its way out, how many miles would you say it would drive before failing? (roughly)
Cheers for your replies fella...

Re: Howling noise
FOUND THE PROBLEM!!
See if anyone can spot it......
There is a leak on the gasket between the turbo and manifold, causing howling noise and also a slight smeel coming through vents.

Spot on, well sort of... there isn't meant to be a gasket between turbo and manifold, just turbo and cat! i knew what u meant though

Some daft 'un has put 1 there when repairing (previous owner)
How hard will it be to remove and clean up (lack of space in engine bay leads me to believe it will be a pain to get to)?
Cheers
