Hi all
In the last month or so my 1.9 dci has started to whistle as the engine is shut off.IVe just checked to try and pin point where the sound is coming from and it seems to be from the cambelt side of the engine.
Last summer I changed the cambelt, auxilary belt, tensioner and waterpump and im wondering if the tension on the cambelt could be wrong, the engine runs fine with no noises but as I switch it off theres a very slight whistling type sound which I thought could have been an air leak but I'm not sure now
Any ideas gladly received
Steve

How long does it last after switching off the engine?

Hi AlexB
noise only lasts for as long as engine takes to stop turning so it only lasts 1-2 seconds
Thanks for replying

Re: engine whistles when switched off
Steve and Steve,
There is no timer or anything which keeps the oil pressure on after/while stopping the engine...
The sound can be mechanical, coming from the belts/pulleys/tensioners/mounts, or can be caused by the engine stopping system (the throttle valve with a vacuum actuator). I don't know, to be honest...

Re: engine whistles when switched off
I get the sound of electrics running. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
But it is perfectly normal. The ECU is still prepared to start the car. It shuts off after a minute or so.

Mine makes no noise after switching off and removing the keycard. However if you stand around for a minute or so, you can hear the cutoff valve snap open again as the vacuum slowly discharges. I don't know either. Plus my noise is from the opposite side of the engine. Could it be the vacuum releasing?

Thanks for replies Chaps
May be I'm just getting paranoid-I've just recently started getting check injection & service lights come on when engine is cold & glowplugs checked out fine.I'm going to have a look at/change the glowplug relay as the next step.
Also since last year I've replaced the clockspring after it snapped, the battery died with no warning in the middle of summer and the boot lock is having a funny five.....other than that I still think its a great car to drive
All the best
