Buzzer / clicking noise in dash on engine start

Postby frenchcar » Mon Jan 25, 2010 3:27 am

On start up, immediately following the lamp test I get a buzzer / rapid clicking noise from inside the dash. I thought it might be related to the cruise control or speed limiting systems but when these were deactivated I still have the noise on start up. The noise does not re-occur once I am driving but may reoccur if I sit at idle for a minute or two.

I wonder if anybody else has had this problem? Is this one of the warning systems? I cannot find any reference in the manual.

I am in a city with no Renault dealer so have few specialist options near by. Any advice appreciated.

You don't mean the clicking of the electric steeringlock, do you?

What model, year and mileage?

The electronic steering lock is a strong contender for these symptoms as mentioned. People have reported that the lock will not engage when the engine is stopped and key card removed and door opened. Others have reported the lock engaging whilst driving. This is a serious safety hazard if it is the problem.

The lock on some models has an odd left handed thread bolt on it which often shears off. It may be a loose connector, broken assembly, or problem with immobiliser. Get the car examined as soon as possible.

It may not be the steering lock that is causing the noise however.

Do you have climate control or just standard AC/heating on the car?

sorry about the delay in responding< I have been travelling interstate.

My car is a 2005 Megane II Sport. I have the standard aircon system. I am still having difficulty detecting any pattern to the noise other than on start up following the lamp test. I live in the tropics and the aircon is on all the time. The clicking noise does seem to occur more frequently if the outside temperature shows higher than 32 C ( a common occurance). I have tried starting without the a/c and it made no difference.

I read the posts about the steerining lock with some concern but have had no steering related problems when the clicking / buzzer has activated.
