Hi, I have a 2007 mEGANE 1.6. My steering feels overly light. Is it possible to adjust the steering to be heavier?

Sadly no. :-(

All Megane's have electrical (opposed to hydraulic) power steering and it is very light at low speeds, parking and around town but is supposed to weight up as speed increases.

if I take it to a renault garage, can they hook it up to their computers and adjust the steering to be heavier?

I own a 2004 1.9dCi megane and I wouldn't call my electric power steering light. But I wouldn't call it heavy either!

Having driven many courtesy cars from renault over the years, namely 1.4, 1.6, 1.5dCi 86 and 1.9dCI Meganes, I can say that each models power steering felt different. All of them were lighter than my 1.9dCi, well apart from the 1.9dCi which felt the same. I found the 1.4 to be the lightest.

The Meganes electric power steering ECU is programmed with what engine type/size, wheel size and transmission type the car is. This information is reprogrammable.

I would approach Renault, and see what they say about this but it is definitely possible - it's all in the technical manual for the car. The manual states that this information is required for the power steering computer to provide the correct steering assistance for the vehicle.

As to whether Renault would actually reprogram this data is another issue - this data could well be important for other electrical systems to operate correctly such as the ESP and ABS and so on... (as different engines are obviously heavier than others etc) I also doubt they would do this for you if your car is still under warranty!

Hope this helps!

Phil
