Clunking steering, no steering lock

Hi,

I know this has been discussed before, but I'm still no clearer.

I have a 1.6 Megane CC, 34k miles, 54 plate. I have a problem in that I hear a clunking/clicking noise from the steering column when putting the steering in full lock. This also happens when straightening up the wheel. When the engine is off, I also am unable to engage the steering lock at all. Once pulled away there is no noise and the car handles normally.

Is this likely to be an expensive fix? Is it possibly something I can do on my own (with help)?

... also, the tracking is slightly out. Im not sure if this has any relevance.
