Wrong Mirror Switch!

Postby upanddown22 » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:56 am

Sorry for my second topic in a week! I've just bought a new mirror switch for my 53 Megane Dynamique, as the lever on the old one had snapped off.

Unfortunately the switch I have just bought has the mirror folding option on, whereas my car doesn't have that facility. If I fit this switch is it likely to do any damage? Including if I accidently put it in the fold in position? And thirdly would the switch even work in my car??

Thanks in advance!

Do you mean the control joystick that sits on the drivers door? If so, I can't see any reason why the superiour one would cause you any problems, other than possibly having a different connection somewhere.

Hey Gav, yep it's the one on the drivers door. Guess I was worried that if I spun it round to the fold in switch that something else in the car would break lol. I'll give it a go later on and keep my fingers crossed :o)

Thanks

Quick update: Tried to fit the switch last night, unfortunately the new plug has 10 pins and not 8 like the old one and is completely different, oh well!!

If any one needs a new mirror switch with fold-in mirrors let me know! Or if anyone has a spare switch to sell let me know as well!!! :)

You can use that control with a small mod.

If you look at the unit as you would when sitting in the car then rotate it through 180degs on the X axis the 8 pins to the left are what you want to connect to. If you file down the plastic surround you can connect the plug and the mirrors work as expected albeit not when moved to the white dot at 6 o'clock.

I'll second that. Its not perfect, but a simple fix. The extra pins are likely for the folding option. You can safely ignore them and just hotwire the 8 pin to the 10 pin with a little bit of experimentation. The worst thing that could happen is a blown fuse. Most likely you will have the mirrors moving in the wrong directions until you get it right.

Thanks for the responses, I think i'd rather avoid the bodge, for now at least, assuming I can find another switch!

I've seen a lot of switches from the Mark 1 Megane on ebay but these seem to be 7 pin, any ideas what the 8th pin does on the mk 2?

Can't understand this. According to the Haynes wiring diagrams 4 and 7, there are either 6 pins or 10 pins.

The manual I'm looking at is #4284 which covers Megane 2002 - 2005 Petrol and Diesel. Does not cover Coupe cabriolet or 2.0 litre.

Best phone the dealership and get a part number, then shop around...?

Thanks Dave for having a look, it's definitely an 8 pin! Will have to get a Haynes when I can afford it!

That does sound really odd, I had a further look at them last night and it would be a big bodge to get them to work together, the pins are completely different sizes and spacing. I got it off ebay for cheap but just found the original photo didn't show the automatic fold in option on the switch so i've emailed them.

Managed to find another one on ebay yesterday that had better pics and included a pic of the back of the switch which has exactly the same markings on as mine so fingers crossed! It was taken from a 03 Clio.

Quick update for completeness...

Did a check of the plug and it turns out there are only 7 wires going into it, so I imagine it would work on the 7 pin switches from the early Renaults. The 10 pin switch definitely wouldn't fit and would take a lot of bodging to make work.

All sorted now, although due to an ebay mistake, I've got 2 spare switches! One with the extra mirror option, One without!!!
