12v cig lighter socket

Postby antos » Wed Sep 09, 2009 6:19 pm

Renault Megane 1.6VVT Saloon (Sedan) 04 plate

Beware of using cig lighter socket for phone chargers etc, plugged charger in this morning 5am
on way to work, it took out climate control, windscreen washers and clock/ temp readout. Caused
me concern all day till I checked glovebox fuses turns out to be the 15a radio fuse had blown. Bizarrely radio
still worked for 20 mins so presume that has a back-up fuse.
Is this a common fault and shall I not use the 12v socket in case same problem reoccurs.

your comments appreciated

cheers Antos

Can't say if this is a common problem but the exact same thing happened to me about a month ago when having a phone charger plugged in :hm
Luckily it's an easy and very cheap fix...

Yeah i had the same thing! I plugged in my Iphone docking thing, and that was the end of that. I have not used it since as i dont wanna have to spend my whole life replacing that fuse.

But i have used it to use an electric pump before this no probs.

Anybody got a long term fix for this or a way to stop it blowing? I was almost tempted to put a bigger fuse in.

I must say that my sister's megane saloon from 2008 has had the same problem. I think it might have something to do with the quality of the charger/appliance you stick into it. Had the same problem on my Fiat bravo. The charger was a very poor quality one, made in Taiwan or similar.

My charger is a nokia charger (3 months old), dont think its the charger
probably an infrequent fault on 03-06 Meganes. Puzzling !! :conf

Renault do a socket for replaces the cigarette socket, it has a little black cap saying 12v. I changed mine as some adaptors appeared not to work.

Is there any reason to assume it would be different with the accessory socket and is this a DIY job?
How much money am I looking at in case?

Cheers :)

I must admit, though, that mine is not a cig lighter, it's just a 12V socket. 8-)
