Megane Fuse Boxes for Washer Pump

Postby gmonkey » Sat Jun 27, 2009 5:16 pm

Hi,

My washer pump has stopped working Fr&Rr. Seems to be the same problem a lot of people have had. It ran dry and then packed in. I'm think the motor has probably given up the ghost as this is usually the case but before I go blowing £30 on a new one I really want to check the fuses. Trouble is neither the manual or the diagram on the interior fuse box tells you which fuse is for the washer pump and the under bonnet box is nigh on impossible to reach all the fuses. I've searched the net for this on similar problems but no one seems to know which fuse it is. If anyone can give me an answer or maybe a link to a wiring diagram it would be greatly appreciated.

If it were the fuse you would have noticed other things not working but, according to the diagram I am looking at it is fuse G (second horizontal fuse from top) beside the glove compartment. If it is the pump, the Haynes manual advises that bumper removal is necessary though they do tend to over-react sometimes.

Just a quick note to say that this was bang on, and that was after my local garage reckoned it was not the fuses and wanted to get an auto electrician in!
So second top fuse from the top it is (it was)

Good stuff! It's hard to tell whether some of these garages are crooks or just incompetent. I'd like to think a good garage mechanic would pop in a fuse and send you on your way or at least tell you what to do. Sadly those days seem to be over and we end up compensating dealers for their reduced profits elsewhere.

I bet they used a fault code reader if my recent experiences are anything to go by. They sound like they should save a lot of diagnostic work but too often they are used instead of simple logic.

Amen to that. Mechanic or monkey? I blame the abolition of technical colleges among other things - hands on training is lacking - as is the general level of education in critical thinking. That and the red tape that means that garages have to re-coup business costs by charging £35-£50 per hour. The manufacturers don't help by making things needlessly complex.

In my case, any job I can do on the car, I do myself. I have limitations in skills and tools, so for major mechanical work I entrust the car to a guy who has been known to me for 25 years. His experience is invaluable.

For simple parts such as fuses and bulbs (and this is a real killer) I often go to see Denziel at his petrol station/garage. Denziel's daughter is the same age as my mum - they went to school together. He is 96 and still works full time. His 'office' is chaos as defined by 'stuff is everywhere but I can always put my hand on what I need'. Indicator bulbs cost 25p - or pretty much at cost. He lends tools for a small fee or favour (such as changing a house light bulb or switch). His fuel costs a penny more than the major retailers but I still fill up there from time to time. During the fuel protests where petrol and diesel were rationed and supplies were running out (remember that?), you could rely on him for a constant supply. Oddly enough, he's the only person who can remember how to correctly set the dwell angle on an old fashioned distributor - worth considering when you pay lots of money for the next coil pack. Ah - memory lane.....

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

The way cars are designed these days ensures there will be few Denziels in future. Sealed bonnets can't be far off. Obviously there is a good business case for manufacturers wanting to keep repairs and maintenance within their dealer networks so I guess there is not much point complaining too much about this. But I've moaned on here before that certain things should be user accessible by law. I had an indicator bulb fail on a BMW X5 just before a motorway journey some years ago. I naively thought I would pull into the nearest petrol station and swap the bulb for under £2. No chance. After a deal of head scratching and a heated phone call to my dealer (who was about to close and miles out of my way), I got them to agree to wait for me to bring the car in as changing the indicator bulb was a 1 hour workshop operation. This is just dangerous. Megane owners out there who have been forced to drive around with one headlamp for any length of time know what I'm talking about. Bulbs, fuses and circuit breakers, wiper blades and the like should be accessible WITHOUT TOOLS as a design imperative.

I used to live near a car parts shop in Battersea (south London) that constantly amazed by always having in stock whatever obscure part I needed. they used to open until 10 or 11pm and thrived on business from us DIYers, local mechanics and AA/RAC patrolmen. They remain in business (albeit keeping more normal opening hours) only because some 70s and 80s vehicles are still on the road. There would be no point stocking parts for modern cars since, as a rule, only main dealers and specialists with their special tools can fit them.
