Hi Guys


I have a Megane 1.6 on an 04 plate. Recently had coil & plugs replaced car was running fine. Just put the card into the dash and it tells me that the "steering is locked". The service light comes on, the car refuses to start. When the engine is then "turned off" it says "steering not locked". The steering wheel is physically locked the whole time however, I have tried to turn it but it wont budge.

I have spoken to my local mechanic and his diagnostics will not read my ECU so left with little option but to call the AA and get towed to a Renault Main Dealer.

I was wondering if anyone had had a similar problem.

Read manual in Links. The lock may need replacement.

Sorry to be a bit dim. I looked in links and could not find manual or is the manual available via the Renault site

Is it only a Renault dealer that can change the lock?

In Links there is only one thread with "repair manuals" in the title. It contains the links to PDF documents. In particular, you may want to read p.71 here:

However, you may want to get all PDF manuals, because diagnosis may need a bit more reading. The message you've got on the display, for example, is mentioned somewhere else in a different file.

These files are a part of Dialogys system, which can be found on ebay or various p2p/usenet/etc. networks. If you want full information in English -- get the package. The full package includes drawings, part numbers, labour times, prices, etc.

The lock can be changed DIY or pay someone if can't be bothered. I never tried this as I prefer to remove the load from the lock latch before starting the car.

i had this problem with mine, turned out to be a blown fuse in the little read box on top of the battery.

I will check. I have recently had my Coil Pack & Plugs changed by a local garage and was wondering if it was something they had done to cause it to go wrong.

Just a quickie, what was the fuse for as I do not have a box on top of my battery

It is in p.58 in the same file as I provided the link to earlier... You will have to remove the battery cover first.

it was number 3 in that picture on page 58 that had blown in mine.

Thought I would post an update.

Just changed the fuses mentioned above and still no luck. As you can probably tell not that mechanically minded so Renault Main Dealer here I come!

Can't you find an independent Renault garage or decent independent normal garage? The Dealers WILL fleece you.

Hi there, did you get any luck with the LOCKED STEERING WHEEL on your Megane?
I'm having same trouble on my 2004 1.5 dci, please let me know, thanx.
