How to test pencil ignition coils? Megane II 1.4 16V

Postby Joske » Tue Apr 07, 2009 2:52 pm

Hi i own a 2005 Renault Megane II 1.4 16V. The car drives normally I think, no misfires, but when idling i can feel the whole car shake now and again, the revs dont change, however recently i am starting to notice a drop in revs now and again, but its not hand in hand with the shaking.

I have read the 1.4 and 1.6s are prone to coil failures on a regular basis, i have noticed i have three original coils and one non original, so a coil has been changed in the past. So what i was hoping to find out was, how can i test the coils so i dont end up replacing them all?

The manual states to check them with a multimeter but im unsure how to do this as the procedure is not explained. All that i am given is the following....

HT Coil Resitances

Primary Resistance 0.54 +- 0.02 ohms
Secondary Resistance 9.0 to 12.4 kohms

A dummys guide to test coils would be great. Thanks.

Joske

Read the fault codes. They will indicate which cylinder misfires.

I have no engine management light on nor do i have any errors stored. I believe the coil is failing not failed.

Thanks mate, but that was also me asking the same question on the Fiatforum. Sadly that method of testing coils didn't work as the coils are different to the ones they are thinking off.
