Hi again,

I had a little experiment yesterday. was going on the highway after filling a tank, and I was going the while way ~90km/h, no by passing almost, just touring steady between 85-100 km/h the whole way.

The computer was showing crazy data around 4 l/100km, so it said that the 120km I drove was around 5 litters of diesel.

I wonna souble check it after work (fill up full tank).

If so then living in a hilly city makes a lot of difference, escpecially if you drive 10 minutes to work, the engine doesnt get warmed up enough until u park.

well a small manual car is best for intown drives.

I have never gone below 34mpg and had upto 48mpg on a run

Just got an 08 1.4 3dr tech run

Did 750 miles with 2 kayaks on the roof driving a mix of motorway and around hilly wales and managed 36/37 mpg.

Also managed 45mpg at the weekend on a 100mile round trip.

Hi all. I have a 1.4 expression on a 54 plate. I only brought the car at the weekend but noticed on the trip that my mpg is only 22.8. Any idea why this is so low? When I 1st looked at the car it said there was a range of 120 miles til I had to fill up with 54 mpg. The car wasn't used so I don't understand why it's changed. Any ideas?

Possibly but the range to fill up was only 76. In the space of a day of not being used both the fuel and the mpg had dropped alot. Also 20 odd mpg seems really low. Any ideas?

mine is a 1.5dci 2003 (86hp?) manual.

I do a 110 mile round trip on fast, low traffic country lanes -not even dual carriageways- and average 66 mph. some is at 75mph - some at 45mph, but no stationery traffic or stuck in queues. 55 miles in 1 hour 15 minutes is typical journey time...an hour on a lucky/ very fast day. I freewheel down any steep slopes so long as speed remains above 55/ 60- not average technique , but neither is my journey average - up/ over steep pynlimon mountains from aberystwyth wales, into and down the wye valley. And using brakes is a last option ! accelerating hard and braking hard is pointless -maintaining an overall good speed is achieved far better by accurate steering, and neither going slow nor unduly fast - easy to say I know, but consumption for me is 66mph on a typical 1500 mile trip reset distance. pretty fantastic - (shame about all the red warning lights I get though!) oil and filter change every 10K just in case, and keeping tyre pressures slightly up to improve mpg. I think that is a fantastic consumption mindful of my journey - last car was auto 5 series diesel bm - ave 33 at best - previous was a 2.5 non turbo merc estate, auto....averaged 16 once towing a big caravan to cornwall !

reply to sharna 86 - I have noted my fuel gauge to `lurch` from quarter full to nearly empty as if the gaugue had stuck - range also dropped so maybe that is the answer ? Best is really a full to full run - even over a few tankfulls. readings over shorter distances can be misleading.....

I have a 1.5 dCi 86 Dynamique, had it just over 2 years.I am currently averaging 45mpg, the best I have achieved is a mere 48mpg.

It was just serviced 3 month ago, new tyres then too. Most of my driving is short commutes to work, 6 miles at a time. Even my wife who is much lighter on the gas only seems to get 203mpg more than me.

I was thinking of changing cars but don't want my fuel bill to increase looking at the 62mpg official figure for this car comparing them to the figures for some of the things I am looking for.

My commute is a hilly 10 miles, and over the course of a year I average 59 mpg. (1.5dCi 86).
Sounds like something is amiss, unfortunately I don't know what.

Even my wife who is much lighter on the gas only seems to get 203mpg

Spot the typo I meant she gets 2 -3 mpg more. The joys of posting on your phone!

The car runs fine, is regularly serviced etc. I do tend to have the aircon on all the time which will reduce mpg but not to the extent I have.

This is the best I can do:
My daily commute,
44km on the motorway and 6km in the city, average 5.9lt/100km, or 74 mpg (i think), (1.6 vvt sedan)
With properly inflated tyres, 32psi front 30psi, rear and brand new air filter.

Not good news for me

ive had my car 3 months now (1.5 dci 100bhp) and when i 1st got it the trip computer said average 58.3 mpg
after regular day to day driving, not covering many miles, but a mixture of scenarios (open road driving, back road driving, town driving and the odd motorway drive, the trip has slowly dropped down to 54.8 mpg, which says a lot about my driving, it s***e

on the good note though, ive gone from putting £30 in the tank for just over a weeks driving, to making £40 and some redex last over 2 weeks with no less driving than usual, this is on 137.7 per litre of diesel

What helps me to drive more efficiently is to always use the "current" fuel consumption indication. This slows me down!

I peaked at 63.9mpg from Birmingham to Liverpool yesterday, and then an overall average of 61 mpg on the return journey.

Average speed was around 60 although the trip computer showed a lot less due to local roads etc. Return journey was faster though. Fuel was a mixture of half tank of Asda diesel (what was left over from before) and half a tank of BP Ultimate.

This has been my best ever to date.
