You are probably right, unless this operation requires new firmware... You will also need to check if the button is actually connected to anything. Check the electrical diagrams (see my sticky thread above this one), although they can be confusing...
I don't think anyone reported such a modification in this forum.

Humm.. ok, I'll check that!
Do you happen to know, where the wiring for these sensors comes from? The ceiling? I could try to remove the ceiling cover to check for it...
If I can find the wiring, in theory it should be as simple as fitting the rearview mirror, glueing the sensor, plugging everything and enable everything with the CLIP interface.
I'm thinking on buying this. It includes AutoDim RearViewMirror and the lighting/windscreen sensor:

I would guess it is the same loom that goes to the front cabin light. I have no idea if the loom in your car includes the necessary wires. Have a look if there are any unused connectors hidden near the front cabin light.
