There is a Technical Note fro Renault emphasising importance of this grease!

Any progress Midge?

In my experience it is unlikely to be anything to do with the plugs.


I have found trying to diagnose the faulty coil(s) is a bit hit and miss. I have read on other forums that the coils are wired in pairs i.e. 1 & 3 / 2 & 4. Some owners take this into account when trying to identify and change the faulty coil(s).

I found that the best way was just to change them all.

I just got the coils today at lunch time, so will prob be tomorrow before i can try and fit them. i didnt know about them being in pairs. im just going to replace coils 1 & 2 and the spark plugs since there cheap and see what happens. i will let you know!

Just thought i would update you guys. Turned out to be very confusing changing the coils. When i tested them the other day by pulling out the electrical connector it was coils 1 &2 that were faulty. So tonight i changed coils 1&2 started the car and could tell right away that it wasnt right.

So decided to test it again by disconnecting the electrical connector from the ignition coil!... this time however it was coils 1 & 4 that were showing faulty (ie when i pulled the connection out of the ignition coil the car didnt stall..... so since i had only bought 2 coils decided to put back the original 2nd coil and replace the coils 1 & 4 also since i was taking the coils out decided to change the spark plugs as well.

So in the end after changing ignition coils 1 & 4 the car seems to be working perfectly (touch wood). At the minute tho the toxic fume light is still on as is the service light. Does anyone know if this should just go out itself or would i have to bring it to a renault dealer or the AA if possible to clear the code?

the coil pairing is 1 & 4 (th outside ones) and 2 & 3 (the inside ones).
sounds like your problem was with coil 4 (and maybe 1 as well)

are your coils 2&3 still the original ones? if so check the code stamped on the outside, it is a date stamp in julian format (yy-ddd). If they are before 03-360 then these are known to be faulty and i'd change then anyway.

when i had a coil go, the dash light didn't come on, so not sure if it should go out immediately or soon, but i have had dash lights on for engine mgmt sensors, and they go out after about 10 journeys (after the sensors been changed of course)
