its manual and it does normaly work even in cold weather obviously not on cold setting otherwise i cant keep the windows clear

if its manual no matter what it will always activate...

So, do you have access to ta diag computer? To check whats the info inside the AC actuator. It should be somewhere its actuator condition: "A/C On" or "AC off"

I have a 1.5dci my aircon works... but doesn't get very cold? does this mean it needs re-gassing?

Mine was the same until I replaced a completly blocked pollen filter now works fine.
