KEYCARD BROKEN

Postby ukpassking » Tue Feb 15, 2011 8:58 pm

Hi today i droped my keycard (I only have 1) Then when i returned to my car it wouldnt start, When shaking the card i could hear something inside,
I was 30 miles from home with a phone with a flat battery stuck outside a shop, I was on my way home from measuring a pub Iam gonna fit the carpets in a few weeks.
So I got my carpet fitting knife out and opened the keycard up, Ive noticed a small chip missing at the top of the card is this a easy repair?
after catching 3 busses home I rung renault and they said about £200 for a new key card.. WOW..... They wont try to repair any key card. Can I buy a 2nd hand key card from ebay and have that recoded to my car? do they need my car to code a new key? The thing is I need my car for work every day I dont have my car I'm losing money... I dont fancy leaving my car for anylonger then is needed 30 miles away. I have key care with my ins, but when I rung them they said because the key is not lost or stolen they cant do anything, They dont cover broken keys? If i knew that I would of just said key is lost.... and now its on file as ive rung with a broken key I dont think i can wait a few days and ring again and say its a lost key?
I need the fastest way to get back on the road any ideas please guys/gals..... please iam pulling my hair out here. :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead

Phone Key Care back and report your other key stolen.

The transducer in the card can be repaired but it is tricky and requires good soldering skills.

There are post on here about how people have cut them apart and repaired them - but they took 30 minutes opening up the card with care. Depending on how careful you were, you might be okay.

Shop around different dealerships - I've seen a price of £90 for a new card. Weigh up how many hours work you will lose fitting carpets against the replacement card cost....

Thanks for your reply dave, you think they would make the key cards a little bit better... My dad used to own a renault grand scenic and the 4years he owned it he had to replace the key card twice.
I only droped the card my fault I know but still a little bit.... :banghead
I cant work tomorow so Ive lost £85 there allready, Then day after £60 etc etc
do u know how long renault will take to get the card in? is it a stocked item?

Update, I went to my local renault dealer and they wanted £224 For a new card and for it to be programed & I had to get the car to them add another £40-£50,
I had a bit of a disagreement with the poor chap on the parts desk HOW MUCH.... THATS A RIP OFF FOR A PART RENAULT MADE SO POOR TO BEGIN WITH I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER RENAULT AGAIN... bla bla bla... And just like that he said, ''as a good will gesture we will do it half price £112''
How can they go from £224 to £112 just like that, Just goes to show they can charge what they like.... Thats with a 7 day wait aprox, so could be longer....
On the way to the bank I drove past a locksmith, I poped in to try my luck, yes no problem I have them in stock can do it in the morning, price £150. and for a 2nd key £60.
