Dipped beam has failed (both sides)

Postby roadki11 » Wed Dec 15, 2010 4:49 pm

Hi there, I have a 55 plate 1.5dCi Megane Expression.

A few days ago (last friday - -8C here in Sunderland) I started the car up and noticed the lights appeared a bit dim.
It appears that both the dipped headlamps have ceased working.
The green dipped light still works on the dash but only the side lights come on.
Full beam still works from the stalk and I can put the front fogs on if the dipped lights are switched on.

I have searched the forum and the only mention of this problem did not yield a result.

If any one could shed in light (ha!) on this problem I would be most grateful.

Thanks in advance.

I had this just a couple of days ago, was just unlucky both bulbs had blown at the same time, I assume that's what'll have happened with yours...
Change of bulbs has obviously fixed mine!lol was a bumper off job as access is horiffic!!

This fault is slowly becoming more common, but I have yet to understand why.

Yesterday I drove over to my brother's house with a boot full of tools and diagnostic kit after he phoned to say both his headlamps were out (Seat Ibiza). He isn't the most practical minded of people. Kudos to VAG for allowing hand access to the bulbs though. Removed one bulb (H4) filament for dipped showing no resistance. Exactly the same the other side. He claimed that they both went out simultaneously a few seconds after he had switched them on.

Got a bit pissed off that a trip to Halfords and the purchase of a pair of H7s was a waste - his car handbook and Halfords best computer both said that they were the correct ones... I guess that the Germans don't get everything right - even if it was built in Spain.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!
