16mm or 18mm?

Postby dkingy11 » Tue Jun 22, 2010 8:41 am

Hi all, was wondering if someone could help me.... im in the process of ordering lower suspension arms (wishbone) but have been told there is 2 different variants. Either 16mm or 18mm ball joint threads.

Does anyone know the correct fitment for my 1.9dci 03 reg? I assumed they would be all the same but apparently not.

Cheers :)

hi,i too am (nearly) in the process of renewing the wishbones, then saw this post and was worried that i may have bought the wrong wishbones (bought on ebay for £30 pair about 3 years ago,cos they were cheap,NOT needed at the time)so checked with my usual parts supplier (andrew page) who stated that yes there are 2 different sizes as you say but they are not specific to the model or year of vehicle which means that it could be any of the 2 choices.the only way to check is to measure your old ones apparently.
sorry that it`s of no real help,but it`s basically `suck it and see`.....ooer ;)

You would think they would just have 1 common size for all but no....... i'm gonna take a guess and go for 18mm as they are the most expensive, so its bound to be them ;)

£30 for a pair is a good price, were they new or 2nd hand?

the ones i got were 18mm,brand new febi bilstein items, so yes they were quite a bargain........unless of course they`re wrong

i`ve booked a couple of days off work (next mon+tues) to do a few needed jobs on the car,in work,on a ramp of course,so we`ll see then how much of a bargain they were.
also managed to get replacement steering arms for £11.75 each, delphi items,so good quality too...and that was from a local factor.
also got strut top bearings + mounts for £25 per side from same place.

Any ideas where the clunk is coming from, can you pinpoint it?

Also what arms were fitted (does it state on your reciept?)

Just out of curiosity, how long was your car in the garage and did they report any problems fitting them?

well, did all the jobs today, and yes,.......the arms had the wrong size ball joints in them :banghead ,so bought 2 16mm balljoints for £28 and pressed them into the new arms so job done.

i`ve now got 2x 18mm (brand new) ball joints surplus if anyone wants them in exchange for beer/tokens.

Nightmare mate!! Bet your sick..... So have you not changed the lower arms, just the ball joints?

Ive just had mine done, ended up changing the full arms for an extra £20 per side (to save all the hassle of taking out and pressing new ball joints in). I went for 18mm and everything is spot on (i think) Whats the purpose of having 2 different sizes, just doesnt make sense to me like!! :?

I'm still a bit confused as to what you've done....can you explain in detail? Sorry

sounds like a engine mount. my passat was doing the same last week, single clunk upon hard accelleration and braking and the odd clunk reversing and turning in carparks, they changed engine mount and now silent again.

i had 2x complete brand new arms which were fitted with 18mm joints, but those joints were too big to fit my hubs so i pressed them out and then put new 16mm joints into the new arms and fitted the complete new arms, cos the bushes were a bit shot anyway, and also having the arms off the car out of the way made it much easier to fit new steering arms to the rack.

i agree it does seem a bit silly having 2 different size joints, especially when they are`nt model or year specific, also your car is same model/year as mine but yet different size joints :conf

garage checked all engine mounts and drive shafts and said it could be a faulty wish bone so they are goinng to replace and then see if it still knocks :(
