This isn't true - at least on my car. The engine needs fuel and air to run. The fuel in the case of a failed turbo bearing is the engine oil. The air/fuelling discussion needs a more detailed explanation. There is indeed a cut-off valve - it's NOT electronically operated - it relies on the lack of vacuum from the reservoir to close. In normal operation, pressing the stop button cuts off the diesel injectors - hence the engine stops - when the vacuum chamber empties, the flap closes. Under failure conditions, pressing the button stops diesel injection but not engine oil injection. Since the vacuum is generated by the pump on the end of the camshaft, and said pump is still turning, no shut off occurs. Hence the runaway situation.

when i have done mine i have always had the cat mounting bolts undone so that when you undo the 3 bolts joining the turbo and manifold it give you enough play to remove the old gasket and clean the surfaces.

be careful cleaning them thou as they are both a very highly machined surface.

When on my way to get sum tools nd parts.... My turbo went!!! :x

So after checking for prices ( rip off Renault wanted £1055 to fit a new turbo.) whaaaaaaaat.
I decided to hav a go myself, nd thinking of jus buying recon from somewhere ( really short on
cash so trying to find cheapest)

I finally removed it 2day, along with someones stupid blue peter bodge job of a gasket between
turbo nd manifold which shouldn't be there!!

I was wondering if someone could tell me what's best to use to clean up the manifold machined edge for new turbo to be fitted?

Also could someone explain what the gasket between cat nd manifold would look like? As I'm unsure if I even removed 1. Just so I can renew when fitting back together.

Cheers.

I'm not sure whether this will help, but there are people on ebay selling repair kits for the Garrett for about £30. These seem to include the oil seals and centre bearing etc. For around £120 you can get the above but also a new shaft with impeller and turbine integrated. I've no idea whether these are any good and what specialist knowledge is required when repairing the unit.

Thanks for that mate I wil hav a look! I'm hoping to find a recon turbo quite cheap without having to exchange then try nd recon mine, cos I'm sure it's just the bearings gone...

Anyone any ideas whether there's meant to be a gasket between exhaust nd cat? (2pin)

cheers

do not buy one of them kits specialist machines are needed to balance the shafts when rebuilding them.

the gasket is just a silver metal one, depending on how many mounting bolts your cat has (should be 3 but can be 2) depends on how many bolts are in the gasket, you are best to buy a new one from renault. most defiantly buy a gasket for the bottom oil pipe to turbo (the return oil), as these leak if not.

the easiest way to remove the turbo is to first remove the cat then the turbo, manifolds are best left as is.

clean the manifold with emery cloth/wet and dry.

your going to be looking around £200 for one that will last longer than a week.

Well i found a fully reconditioned turbo for £250. Recieved it yesterday and it looks spot on... comes with 12 months warranty, new bolts and nuts, oil drain gasket, turbo to cat gasket and turbo to manifold gasket.

Few questions:

1. I was told there isnt meant to be a gasket between turbo and manifold yet have been supplied a new 1 for refitting. Should i fit it or not?

2. I am replacing the oil feed pipe but just going to flush oil drain pipe and reuse with a new gasket. the new gasket is different to old 1 which is currently on... (old 1 actually grips around the face of pipe where bolts go and new 1 is a bit thicker and not metal.) Should i leave old 1 on or use this new different 1?

3. Should there be a gasket where the cat connects to exhast pipe? As there was 1 when i removed but cant find part anywhere. there is 1 on ebay but doesnt mention my engine size, just 2.0. should i go for this or not fit 1?

Previous owner of my car must have been a comedian, this just gets more confusing!!
