clnuk when accelerating, breaking and turning

hi all, just bought an 06 3dr 1.9dci megane, feels great to drive but iv recently noticed that on the odd occasion whilst accelerating, turning or breaking i get a 'clunk' sound thats quite noticeable, it cant be a good thing but i was wondering if anyone knows what it could be or if its a major problem? thanks

Possibly an engine mount. There are other options to consider though (driveshaft gaiters, broken springs, suspension top bracket bearings etc).

There is apparently a DIY test for the mounts: get hold of the top of the stationary engine with the plastic cover removed and push/pull with much force. If it moves a lot (yes the vagueness makes me laugh too), there may be a problem in that area. If it won't move much, you're probably safe.

Either way, you probably won't need a specialist garage to fix it - most clued up independents will diagnose the issue. I doubt it will be very expensive (< £200).

Just an opinion.

thanks for the help, i hope its note much, iv read in the forums it could be the power steering gear which sounds pretty bad, but as youve said it could many other minor problems, iv got it going to on ramps hopefully this weekend but il pass on any advice, cheers

sounds like the drive shaft to me. i have had 2 down in 6 month one on a 1.9 and another on a 1.4, very similar noises to what you have described.

the drive shaft sounds like an expensive problem to sort out, how much am i looking at? Is it likely to be an ongoing problem or once its sorted il not have to worry? Cheers

+/-£150 for the driveshaft; there or there abouts. Its not a major job for any mechanic and will take them a few hours.

Take it to a garage and they'll tell you what it is pretty quickly.

sorry its been a month or two, apparently the problem was that a wrong size bolt had been fitted to the passenger side wishbone so every time i started to shift the weight of the car it would slip and create a noticeable clunk, it took the garage besy part of a week to find and probably best part of an hour to sort and didnt cost me a penny because of warranty, thanks for everyones help though
