renault stiffing me over ABS ?

Postby l3ogroll » Thu Apr 22, 2010 9:11 pm

ok few days ago my engine wouldnt start so i called the AA and sorted it out, it was a lose wire on the batt negative side after it was tightened up it was all sorted but my service and ABS light was on, so i did nothing more than rang renault and got the car booked it for a wait appointment

went out thismorning and got 4 tyers fitted bloke wanted to charge 260 but i got it down to 50 a corner (result)

on getting to renault today i told them the prob and they then told me its not a waiting appintment but i was free to wait if i liked i waited an hour and half befor the bloke come back and was told that my abs was all scrambled and needed reconfigering. now heres the kicker... i said it was ok to do cos i thought my exstended warrenty would cover it, but i was told by the bloke it wasnt covered cos nothing is actully broke "its all working but need reconfigering", so i bit the bullet and gave the go ahead reluctantly, was told it was going to be 70 - 80 nuggets...

so still waiting another hour passes and the bloke turns up again telling me theres a new prob... the rear driver side abs sensor is not working so i asked if that was covered to be done under warrenty he said no its not cos the sensor is getting a pules its must be down to the wiring so now they want the car back monday morning to chase the wiring from the sensor and that the price would now be goin up as of monday to £150ish and they will be having it all day (all day to chace a wire what are they funking morons)

now my question is is it wrong of me to refuse to pay for the work thats been done today as it didnt fix the problem and it seems to me like the prob might be this wire in the first place there for why am i paying for them not doing there job propely and doing all the fault finding first also what the hell am i pay for an exstended warrenty???

andy advice or help would be great

Jay,

The ABS and engine light could have malfunctioned due to the loose battery connection problem. Assuming there were no other issues, this could be done with a Renault Clip computer (or possibly even a £30 ELM reader - not too sure about the ABS). An independent auto-electrician suitably equipped would do the the job for less than Renault.

The ABS sensors on my model are two part - a ring on the brakes and a sensor. Both parts are DELICATE. They are easy to damage. Cleaning them carefully restores normal performance. In my opinion, they should simply have read and cleared the codes, driven the car to see if the fault came back and if it did not, charged you for the £80 Clip job - assuming the problem was a random ECU issue.

The fact that they didn't do this suggests three things:

a) They didn't check the obvious problems first
b) They broke the sensor or similar (although they claim it pulses fine)???
c) They are fleecing you

Obviously the problem is that you can't prove they are negligent. They may not have discovered the problem (is the battery still loose etc??). If you haven't paid, I would get out the Yellow Pages, and find a decent auto-electrician. Discuss the problem and get an inspection. You may find that another outfit will sort the issue out faster and cheaper as they rely on word of mouth. Get stuff in writing and if it is fixed, refuse to pay Renault. Send them a copy of the fix and be prepared to haggle over the amount they charged for the non-fix work done.

well i have decided that when thy finally find the fault on monday i will be demanding to see it i'll be taking my camera and will get pictures!

then i will be fighing it out that they didnt do all there fault finding in the first place and just went for the easy option

i mean come on i'm a sparkie and if i go and fix a light.... i dont go to the board and replace the fuse and work back wards

plus the fact that i cant see if something dont do the job its surpost to do how its not broke there just tyring to get out of everything and its not happening on my watch
