Dephaser pulley just changed, but now it's misfiring?

Postby Vickitrice » Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:25 am

When I first start the engine (keyless) it drops revs really really low. I accelorate a little to get it going, and it seems to be jumping. It sounds like it's misfiring (according to the mechanic guy living opposite me)

I luckily bought the car with a 4 year warrenty from the dealer so I'm not worried about the cost, but would like some idea of what it is before I call the garage to yell at them a little bit. I've had it 1 month this week, so far it's been back in for a throttle house clean, a software update, dephaser pulley, and service light reset, so I'm feeling a little vexed about the whole thing as I'm sure you can imagine.

The guy that looked at it said due to the shocking smell when it's first started, it's either the cold start motor, or something more serious like the ecu ( or something like that can't remember wha exactly he said)

So thesymptoms are, jumping about like it's misfiring, horrible burnig smell, huntin for revs in idle, and occasionally on first start it's revs are dropping so low the engine is completely cuttig out.

HELP?

Anyone gt any help? Calling the warranty people tomorrow, so would be good if I had something useful to tell them, or if it's nothing major then I won't worry !

I think I've read this before somewhere... If you aren't paying, let them sort it out. And, get plenty of notes / receipts / service sheets etc. Keep a diary.

Thanks davelowe, I saw a few posts about misfiring in general, but not with the other problems I have. I think it's the cold start motor, but will call them today and kick up stink. Wish me luck!!

Since the symptoms remain after starting, I wouldn't have thought the starter motor was to blame. Keep us updated!

Possible contenders are TDC sensor, crankshaft sensor and coil packs. The catalytic converter may have been damaged by unburned fuel - after they have fixed it insist on an emissions test (assuming they haven't done it) as it will fail the MOT.

Just guesses though as I have a diesel.
