rev counter help! high rev's

hi just bought a megane extreme 1.4 16v 55 plate having abit of a prob with the rev counter it seems to be revving high when i change down my gears or press the brake .it is going just past 2000 on the counter them going down to 1000 then back up again can any one give me some advice on this cheers ste
