Engine problems for my 1.6 2003 Meagne

Postby Sfurber123 » Thu Jan 07, 2010 12:48 pm

Hi all

Think my cam belt has gone which has completely mashed my engine, the mechanic said that it looked like the valve had smashed into the head and to fix it would be at least £1000+! :cry

I had a quick look on ebay at a few engines and they didn't seem too expensive, and my dad seems to think he could fit it.

So basically i need a new engine for my Megane 1.6 2003 Dynamique, i was just wondering what engines can i use? Would the engine have to specific to another 2003 1.6 Megane or could i use an engine from a newer Megane or even a 1.6 clio etc?

Any Advice would be massively appreciated as i am looking at a huge bill and need to work out my options.

Thanks in advance

Sam

I would imagine that the biggest problem you will face swapping the engines is with the electronics. Things need to be coded to other bits and pieces usually, which would require specialist equipment. I don't know much about the petrols though - mines a diesel (and they're probably worse so I may be overstating the problem).

Cheers for that Dave, i was a bit worried about how it would work with all the electrics. The bloke on the other post you linked to seemed to think it could just be a straight swap, although i'm not sure wether he was including the electrics or not.

Tbh i can't see it being an easy task, really don't know what to do with it! Do you think its worth giving it a go?

Do you know if a 1.6 clio for example would have the same engine as my Megane?

Cheers

I'd love to speak to someone who's succesfully completed an engine transplant!

Depending on where you are based, these people might be worth a quote:

or anyone listed here perhaps: https://www.upmystreet.com/findmynearest ... in-uk.html

Cheers for the links Dave

Just been quoted £540+ VAT to fit a new engine if i can get hold of one, does this seem reasonable to you?

He said Ebay was the best place to look and i had a little browse before and saw one or two around the £200-300 mark with 60 day warrantys which will hopefully be long enough to get rid of the thing!
