Hi all
I have a Megane 03 1.6 VVT and when drving at 3000rpm i can hear a loud screaching/hissing noise, especially when the window's down. its hard to explain really, almost like a loud hissing noise like air escaping or when you drive through a puddle fast?
It happens about 3000rpm but as you go past that the noise then dissapears.
It has been suggested to me that it could be a slipping belt, If it is a slipping belt then do you know what belt it could be and if it will be a major problem?
Many thanks.
Sam

Haha, sorry Dave.
I only posted it here as i previously asked about it in the 'screaming turbo thread' and as i have since found out that my car does not have a turbo i thought it was best to post it here, although Gavnaysh has given me some good advice in that thread.
This thread can be deleted then if it is annoying people to the point of being nausea enducing, however Dave if you have any advice for me feel free to post in the screaming turbo thread!
Sorry again David.

Re: Strange screaching/hissing noise at 3000rpm
Sam,
Sorry - I was having a bad day.
It could well be a slipping belt. Check it for cracks and tension also if it is glazed (shiny). It should be tight (should not move more than about 5mm when you push hard on the longest section). I wouldn't advice lubricating it with anything as this may make it slip more. You don't have to replace the tensioner when replacing the belt, but its not a particularly easy job to get the tension correct (Renault use a frequency device to set it correctly).
Other problems could be alternator bearings or air intake hoses leaking/split/loose.
If it sounds like this: https://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/au ... t_slip.mp3 it is the belt.
Dave.

Cheers Dave, very helpful indeed.
I'll have a listen to to that file later as it won't play at work and let you know.
