brake lights

Postby parklife » Sat Jan 12, 2008 1:48 pm

I'm not paricularly mechanically minded but I thought even I could change the brake lights on my Megane (1.6, 53 reg). However I was wrong or is it me....

Both back brake lights are not working although the one across the top of the boot still is. After a bad experience with the headlights from a Renault dealership last year I refuse to take it back to them (afterall how hard can it be to change a brake light!!!!)

Well I went to Halfords picked up some new bulbs, took apart the back lights to do a simple swop and hey presto, nothing!!

I've even taken the reverse light out as it looks a similar type bulb and placed that into the brake light and it still does not work.

Is it the lights I've bought (they look the same) or could it be the electricals?

Any help would be much appreciated

this is exactly why i visited the forum today, my brake lights haev done exactly the same thing...

The high level light works fine but both low level cluster brake lights have stopped working. I've pulled the fuse and checked that, that buzzes fine, i've pulled both brake bulbs and they buzz fine too. Got my other half to step on the brake pedal while i multimetered the contacts, zero. I did this again on the RIGHT side cluster directly on the connector itself and got 0.2v when pedal pressed.

Any idea on whats happened???

Mike.

maybe the brake switch on the pedal. does the car turns on when you press the brake pedal instead of the clutch?

I had the same problem with my 2006 Megane. I sprayed the connector with electrical contact spray and the light worked for 2 weeks. I took it to twotechs renault specialists and Matt adjusted the female connectors, but the brake light went out again after 2 weeks. Before the MOT I cleaned the male connectors with a small file and spayed them with electrical contact spray from Maplin and the brake lights been working OK ever since

carefully stick a needle on the brake light harness and measure there if there is 12v or not. That 0.2v doesnt even count :-)

good luck
