Sounds like the TDC sensor.

it's the dephaser. it's dosent show on diagnostics and the ex-renault mechanic should have known this.

Can you explain how it is the dephaser.

i have been told many things i now believe not even renault fully know its just trial and error even when the car was cutting out it was onl on start up i have had no rattles or grinding noises now the car is running fine this has happened to me twice now and both times shortly after filling up at a certain garage am not sure if it was the cause but dont use that garage and even when it was cutting out i was still getting the same 35 to 37 mpg on the trip comp around town thetrouble with this car it has to many sensors on it and if one goes it can trigger something else

I am now convinced that the stalling problem (outside a rattling dephaser) is caused by problems with the fuel delivery first thing after a period of no use i.e. overnight parking etc..
As i have said in a previous post, if i start my car and cut it off before the engine starts and do this 3 or 4 times my car will then start fine. My rational is, the fuel pump has then been on for 3 or 4 seconds before I finally start and run the car as opposed to being on for 1 second on 1st start and run.

If a dephaser is not rattling on start, then it is locked in start position and will not effect starting.
I have had my dephaser replaced with the latest revision and the TDC and various others and it has not cured the poor starting. The fuel pump is the next thing for me...dodgy regulator/filter maybe.

Any thoughts?

does the fuel pump start when electrics are switched on ?, if so you can just start the electrics (just push and hold button without pressing pedal) leave for a few seconds for fuel pump to prime fully, then start the car normally. might prove your theory ?

Yes it does come on for about 1 second. I suppose just switching ignition on may give things a bit more time to settle. I'll give it a go in the morning and let you know.

Cheers

Well tried switching on ignition 1st then starting....still the same!
Will remove fuel pump and inspect and strip down what I can.
Again, will let you know how I get on.

well its been 4 weeks now and not a peep out the engine starts first time revs idle arund 750 -800 motors really well 35 to 37 mpg round town not been back to that garage so do think alot of the stalling problems could be down to bad fuel some main garages buy fuel from cheaper suppliers i have stuck with shell and everything is fine dont get me wrong am no expert but car has never run so well in the past i would use any petrol station not now though
