Oil Question... ACEA standards... :o

Postby whenisayjump » Sat Mar 07, 2009 5:47 pm

Hi, I have a 1.9 Dci 130 megane. I believe it has a FAP... as on the inside of the drivers door there is a sticker that says 'FAP'. I need to top up my oil and my manual says I need 5w30 ACEA C3..

I have bought some Mobil 1 oil from Halfords (ESP Formula). 5w30

On the back it says it is. 'ACEA C2/C3, ACEA A3/B3, ACEA A3/B4; API CF.'

I know it says 'C3' but it doesn't say C3 by itself. ... it says 'C2/C3'

What does this mean... is it suitable?

I'm not really sure how these standards work.

You help will be most appreciated.

Thank You
James :(

Yes, it is a correct oil. For Megane II with this engine the minimum specification is ACEA C3 (Webcode confirmed) and for Megane III with the same engine the minimum spec is RN0720 (Renault spec), which includes ACEA C4.

For your car I personally would have chosen an Xw40, ACEA C3, MB229.51 (for example Motul 8100 X-clean 5W-40). See this page:

...but surely as the manual says Xw30... I should go with that?

What does the C2 mean in the C2/C3?

Thanks for your help!

Christ, they have their own specification now!

I thought that was for cars newer than my own?

It gets even more confusing, haha!

Yes, go ahead with it. It is just a good quality Xw40 gives a bit more "protection". It is recommended for the same engines without the FAP filter.

ACEA standards include many tests. C3, in particular, is mid-SAPS, and C4 is low-SAPS. It is all about using a cleaner oil.
