Headlamp Alignment

Postby gjp112n » Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:48 pm

is it possible to adjist the headlamp alignment on a megane II ?
Since my car came out of the dealers yesterday when they replaced a bulb, they point so steeply down that stopped at a T junction, they didn't even illuminate the kerb on the other side of the road
cheers

not helpful - the dealer in question is on the other side of the country. I can't afford to drive three hundred miles to moan

When you say 'they', i take it you mean both lights?? what about the little button below the steering wheel for adjusting to settings 1, 2, 3 or 4 for height adjustment! Allignment usually means left or right as opposed to up or down......stealers charge £17.50 for an allignment! :)

Yes, both. The 'little button' is only meant for adjusting the headlights to compensate for any load you have in the back, and even with that set at its highest level the beams still point pretty much straight down in front of the car

ok suggest you try and reseat the bulbs, had similar thing on a laguna only one of my bulbs was illuminating the sky, turned out when sticking hand in that one of the bulbs locating tangs (for want of a better word) was stuck on the holder and not located properly in the holder, it was noticeable looking at the bulb from outside as it was pointing down casting the light up from the reflector.

If all located fine, then to adjust the height of the beam if you open bonnet and look at black bar that runs over top of headlights from one side to the ither you will notice somew holes directly over the headlight units, look above each one and locate what looks like a white plastic thingy with an allen key socket 8mm if i remember rightly and a cross cut in, grab an allen key insert and again going from memory anticlockwise to raise the beam,

Now i did mine using some trail and error, then hit on a plan, missus has a megane so parked hers about 10 metres in front of a wall checked level switch in normal postion switched on dipped headlights, you will notice that you get a definate line from eack lamp which has a ramp going up on the left hand side (right hooker), mark on the wall with a bit of tape the horizontal part of the beam for each side, moved her motor, parked mine in same spot, bang on lights, open bonnet, slip in allen key and adjust to match, i also stood with the back of my legs on front of the lamp i was not adjusting to cut out its light whilst concentrating on the other, job done.

A quick dash outside and a look under the bonnet suggests the megane is the same as your laguna, I'll have a go when I get home this evening
Thanks for taking the time to actually read and answer the question I asked ;)

If you find the beam pattern when close to a wall (or anything similar you can use) is anything other than \__, then the bulb isn't correctly mounted in the holder. On my facelifted 06 (ie without the clip that holds the H7 bulb in) I managed to incorrectly insert both bulbs and had terrible dipped beams (the pattern was like \/). I managed to sort the drivers side, but have yet to get the passenger side twiddled in correctly!

Hope you can resolve the issue...

megane is same (got rid of laguna last year and did the megane thing) have done it on my silver ride as was not happy after having the front bumper replaced after having a side on meeting with a citroen ax (i killed it), alignment was only a little out but enough to be noticeable, lad at work also mentioned to ensure that the electric leveling system is operational, ie they have not disconnected it when doing the bulbs as on an old vauxhall one of hios came off and the level dropped down, quick check i suppose and worth a punt before twiddling about with the levels.

good luck

it is on of controls under the steering wheel near the dash brightness potentiometer. If the levelling works, but out of range, then it is simple.
