I have an 03 plate 1.6 16v petrol Dynamique, second hand roughly 40,000 miles on the clock...
The problem began when starting the car- it would tick over ok but if I put some revs on and then took my foot off the accelerator the car would cut out. The car restarted ok ut to get going I needed to keep the revs higher than usual. It cut out at the first junction too, but then seemed to be ok when the car warmed up a litlle. This was accompanied by the toxic fume warning light caming on continously, and the service light. I looked at previous advice (perhaps wrongly) that it was a common problem (when the toxic fume filter warning flashes) and changed the coils. I bought 4 new coils from ebay and changed them myself, the car showed no improvement what so ever.
I left the car to do some more 'research' and when I went back to it the next day it will not even tick over, it makes a horrendous ticking sound for a second or two and then nothing. I put the original coils back in and the same happens.
Please help!
Changed coils, now won't start.

Does the 'horrible ticking over noise' sound like a bag of spanners being shaken about? Sort of a metallic rattle?
If so, then your problem is a failed dephaser pulley, not the ignition coils...
