1.5 DCI 106 Engine Tapping Noise

Postby Richie91 » Sun Aug 10, 2008 8:43 am

Sorry put this in the wrong topic first

Hi all,

I've had a good look around the posts first but can't find anything about this problem.

I have a 1.5 DCI 106 Grand Tourer Estate, which has just turned 50k and there is an audible tap tap tapping from the top end of the engine.

It sounds like the old tappet noise you used to get on old cars with tappets but correct me if i'm wrong but these engines have hydrolic shims do they not?

Could it be a cracked shim? or is there likely to be another reason?

many thanks

Richie

Rattly tappets is more common on the 1.4 engine. I'm not sure if it's an oil pressure problem or gradual failure of the hydraulic tappet. My local Renault dealer wouldn't touch mine because it doesn't affect fuel consumption and performance. I bet he'll be more interested once the warranty has run out. :banghead

If the car is still under warranty I'd pop it back to your Renault dealer just to get a proper diagnosis. Yes they do have hydraulic tappets and I think I remember reading something similar about this on another forum, can't remember the outcome though :(

See what the dealer has to say but like Jonault said I bet they won't be too keen to change the tappet(s) if they have started to fail.

Oil change and fill up with a good quality 5W40 ACEA B3/B4 synthetic oil might reduce the noise a little
Make improvements, not excuses!
