Vibration At Tick Over

Hi Guys!!!

My 54 plate megane 1.9 dci has developed a vibration that travels rite through the car at tickover to 1500 revs.Iv searched and read the other posts on engine vibration and a failed top engine mount seems to come up a lot.However most the other posts seem to mention knocking and clunking noises but with mine its just the vibration.
could this still be a failed or week top engine mount????????

Yes absolutely. That's how mine started - vibration at idle, only when cold. Then progressed to vibration at idle at any temperature. Replacing the engine mount solved the problem - until the next one failed I suspect that the knocking and clunking only happens when the disease is fairly far advanced.

hmmm...mine does the same, but ever since I have got the car....and it hasnt become any worse....
I have checked my uooer mount and it looks quite ok to me....

mightn't there be other causes for that as well?

When you say cold, do you mean when the engine is cold or when the temperature outside is cold? I'm having similar problems!

A faulty dual mass fly wheel can also cause engine vibrations at tick over and low speed; I'd go for the top mount first though and then the lower stabiliser bar which controls and damps the engines movements at low speed when accelerating/decelerating.

well, I guess the flywheel would not be dependent of the temperature, would it? and at least with mine I have replaced the steering rods (is that the expression? the bars that hold the stabiliser ) - and it also cant be them because it is also in tickover when the car is not moving.

what about a dirty or faulty throttle flap? can this be the cause on a 1,9 dCi ?

pw981, I was referring to engine temperature, not outside temperature. In any case, here in Johannesburg it never (well, hardly ever) gets really cold

With mine it begins when outside temperature in the morning approaches 10 degrees celsius....above that no problem. and, strangely enough, if I remember last winter right, below 5 degrees also less of a problem....

on tuesday I have mine in for servicing and was planning to have them check it....dont know if there is a realistic chance of finding it now in the summer....

Ouch! dual mass fly wheel that sounds expensive.Are we talking about the flywheel ,as in fly wheel ,gearbox out etc flywheel.
I dont like the sound of THAT£££££££££££££££

Yep!

Apparently one symptom of a faulty DMFW is a rattling noise at tick over and low speed, but this is not always the case.

On the top of my list would be these:
(a) Top engine mount -- it will start knocking within a couple of months -- a very common problem;
(b) An injector -- fuel consumption affected;
(c) EGR valve, fuel filter or bubbles in the line -- if idle is uneven and vibrations are due to random variations in rotational speed;
(d) Lost compression in one cylinder -- causes oil consumption.

Hi there!!!

Thanks for the advise guys.I think I will try the top engine mount first as car is running fine no eratic tickover etc.However I forgot to mention the car has a diesel tuner tuning box fitted.though iv tried unpluging the box and running the car as standard but vibration still the same,so its not that but im thinking this could be the cause of the engine mounting failing due to extra torque. what you recon guys could this be the cause of the problem??????????
