Stickies for fuel consumption

Just returned from a 208 mile trip into mid Wales in the 1.5DCi, about 40 miles of motorway and a lot of A road and B road stuff. Three adults and my five year old grandson on board, I briefly saw 70mpg dropping into Aberdovey on a trailing throttle!!!. See pic below.

Trip comp says 3 gallons used - worked out roughly this equals 7.8p per mile! Not bad me thinks!

70 - 80 on the motorway, 50 - 60 on A roads, 35ish - 45ish on B roads, also included 45mins stuck in bumper to bumper bank holiday jam in Welshpool! So all in all not a bad figure.

I've just had 42.5mpg (a personal best) out of my 1.4 on a run up to York. Overall the average speed was only 44mph due to sitting in traffic queues for long periods and the distance was about 150 miles.

Nice one Jonault! - my best in our 1.4 was 42.7 but that was on a much longer journey than yours. - well done!

Driving like a sensible young man, sticking to all available speed limits, i see 47-50 mpg out of mine, however when i like a song on the radio this soon drops to around 42...

Annoyingly, I was managing 36-37mpg (which is possible in the 2.0l, believe me. Obviously you have to drive in an exceedingly boring manner though) 6 months ago, but as soon as the petrol prices go postal my economy drops to 33-34. Damn you Sod, and your stupid bloody law!

I once managed a heady 60mpg on the way to York.......going downhill in sixth with my feet nowhere near the pedals. All I need is that kind of road to lead everywhere and I'm laughing.

Ive got an 06 plate 1.6 and my mpg is 28.2. This cant be right... can it?

mine's a 56 1.6 dym and im on 40.1 so sounds a bit off to me.

I just got back from a 250 mile round trip yesterday, mostly motorway except for a couple of miles either end. Ended up with an average of 40.1mpg. My car is a 1.6 petrol. I was quite surprised. I suspect i was actually getting better than that because I did not reset the meters before I started off so I still had 50 or so miles of "town driving", brining my average mph to 40something, but on the motorways I was always been 50 and 65.

good question, how r u managing that? the best i have got so far is 38.3 (thats with bp ultima, 35mpg with esso)

hotter ar is less dense so the engine uses less fuel. you should see the opposite effect in cold weather

Cold air is better, as it provides more O2 to aid the combustion process. I have always noticed that my mpg goes up on cold wet days as the air is MORE dense therefore putting more O2 into your cylinders. That's why cars have intercoolers.

Back to the thread. Just bought a 08 86bph 1.5dci for the wife and was disappointed to only get 51.8 MPG on a 700 mile journey from Hereford to Edinburgh and back. Wife had the car set at 72 on the cruise so no excessive speed was applied. On the same journey I get 45 mpg from my 1.6e mk1 petrol doing 80 on the motorway so i am a bit disappointed with Renaults brochure mpg claims. Maybe this will increase as the engine beds in - anybody noticed this.
