Knocking noise

Postby Ray » Sun Jul 22, 2007 11:39 pm

So there's been quite a few threads on a knocking noise coming from x wheel.

I've read some but not all symptoms apply to me.

Basically i get a knocking noise, not loud and the stereo can easily mask it at a quiet level. I have to turn it off to notice it really.
It only happens sometimes when turning left at medium speeds (greater than 20-25mph) and it can be a 90 degree bend or a gentle curved bend and it doesn't happen all the time even at great speeds (i.e. 50+ mph turning onto a slip road etc).
It's coming from the drivers front wheel... idea's anyone?

I had my tyres rotated but that was ages ago and i've driven over 1.5k miles since then... and it's only happened in the last week or 2.

I thought it might have been something in my boot but i've removed everything that isn't stuck down.

so.. any help?

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Jack it up and see if there is any play in the wheel

Hi, I just bought a 2nd Scenic rx4 and had the same knocking noise. It was the shock absorbers, they were loose. Have a check, see if they are moving. Costs about £200 to get both replaced.

Ray

For most of my Megane days I had a knocking noise that emanated from somewhere?

Where that somewhere was, was never found? :?

The car went into the dealers at least 3 times for this and nothing was every found to be wrong with it? On the last occassion I was stood with the senior technician whilst the car was examined and checked. He was as puzzled as me?

Sorry not much help here :(

Knocking still exists... left hand turns only... and it's not the bearings either. I'm living with it.. i rarely notice when the stereo is on.

Same as above, knocking when I turn left and some vibration when braking at high speed - wonder if they are related.

Was this covered by the warranty? If not, what was the cost involved to sort it out?

Also, where are the ball joints and how do I check that is the problem?

Sorry for loads of questions but I'm having a nightmare trying to prove the problem to the garage!

yes it was covered under warranty.

to check: jack the car up off the ground, grab the wheel top and bottom and gently rock the wheel. If you have any movement/play then you have a problem. It's also checked in your MOT.

Cool. To me it sounded like your cv joints were about to go on pension.
