It will probably need adjusting, but your handle could also be faulty?
As this is a safety concern get it to a garage ASAP

Hi Emma
As Iain said - get it looked at asap, I notice you are in Wolverhampton too, Renault Wolverhampton is currently being refurbished - the place looks dead but they are still operating from portakabins at the rear!
If your car is still under warranty, pay them a visit!
PS - nice to know I'm not the only member in Wolverhampton!!!!
Regards

I've got the same problem..
I've got the same problem and the garage says that they probably need a new "handbrake lever assembly" from Renault costing £300!! They havn't had a proper look at it but if I can fix it without requiring a new part then that would be great.
Could you please tell me how you fixed it??
Thanks

Well I've taken the plunge and ordered a Haynes manual so at least I can get the thing off and have a look at it.
Could still do with any advice that anyone has got regarding this though!

Mr Girlfriends 53 Plate 1.6 vvt had the same problem ...handbrake not holding
There is a post on here on how to take the plastic section off and adjust the Handbrake itself ....
I followed this and unclipped the plastic section that surrounds the handbrake..... checked the mechanism but could not resolve ...it seemed that the actual handbrake lever was faulty and the mechanism when pulling the handle up was catching and holding .
Took into Renault Manchester .......brand new Handbrake required, this lncuded the mechanism and actual handbrake handle ....all fitted plus VAT roughly £200.
Superb Service From Renault Mcr i might add!!

See my message in the Links section. Follow the link, scroll down to the last three lists of documents and open the 3rd document in the third list from the bottom. Page 37A-20.

I've had 2 handles fail on me under warranty, the funny leather
bit in the middle just went completely loose on both occasions.
Why can't Renault just go with the usual style and not try to do things
different which in the end fail, the wobbly handle is a known problem
and my dealer have changed a few others over the last few years.

i had this problem as well
a quick fix is to
remove the plastic trims
you will see the teeth
theres a little arm looks like part of a coat hanger
bend it a little bit with a pair of pliers (small twisting motion)
this will give the affect of tigtening the adjustment !
thats how i fixed it and i have had no problems since

Got mine fixed but needed a new handbrake assembly at £185!
Told them to leave the old one in the boot, got it home took some of it to bits and guess what was wrong.
A tiny bit of plastic that the button release spring needs to bend against has broken off so the spring does not force the button back out thus allowing the ratchet to engage. A tiny little bit of plastic making the handbrake work, that cannot be right can it.
I am going to try and speak to Renault about it.
