Most annoying sound ever!!

Postby northernmonkey » Sun Nov 04, 2007 6:59 pm

Just bought myself a Megane 1.4 dynamique 53 plate, had the car for about 5mths, i 1st noticed this sound when i first ventured on the motorway........terrible whirring noise coming from the front wheel area drivers side, the sound goes when pressing accelerator but then reappears, i took it back to the dealership(perrys) i bought it from and after supposedly stripping the front wheel and searching in the engine, nothing was found, i was told it must be a common sound with Renault Meganes?? since then my engine cut out and i lost total power for about a second, so i took it back and they paid for it to be taken to a garage where Renault diagnostic equipment could be used on the engine......nothing was found wrong with the car. However even thou the car has not lost power since this whirring noise is getting louder, i have had a look at the front wheel and it looks like the back of the alloys are flaking , like a sheet coming off? i wonder if this could be the problem with the sound but seems unlikely as sound disappears when pressing accelerator. sound is like an annoying spinning sound/ whirring .can anyone shed some light on this problem, many thanks.

is the noise comming from the wheels or the engine ?

possibilities include...
Wheel Bearing
Tyres

Water Pump
CamBelt

sounds like it is coming from the front wheel area, plus noise gets louder the faster i go, however strange noise quietens goes when pressing accelerator??

To me this sounds like a failed wheel bearing but you would be able to hear it most of the time not just when you are going fast on the motorway? :?
It could be induction noise from the engine but again you would think it would get louder when you accelerate?
It could also be one of the drive belts or the waterpump bearing?

I think you need to get the mechanic to come out with you on a test drive so that you can pin point the noise, and it's b*** s*** that it's a common noise on Meganes, they are ususally very refined even at motorway speeds.

As for the alloys flaking, I'm in the same boat as you,but just not as bad yet; trying to get them refurbed under warranty.

thinking about it you can hear it most of the time and seems to be getting louder, was going to swap front with back wheel but dont know if that will affect my wheel pressure sensor? if it is wheel bearing what kind of costs am i looking at?

If you have tyre pressure sensors don't swap your wheels as it will bugger the system up!

Taking it to Renault will cost you a lot more than if you use a good independant garage, but as for how much, I dunno?

I had somebody in the car today, he said it is definately your wheel bearings, he said his old car did the same thing....mine has started to do it when excellerating hard as well as going at fast speeds, only seems to quieten when accelerator is depressed???? let me know what garage says, if they were anything like mine then they will blame it on a common noise with meganes!!

funkythumbs42,

Have you tried a good synthetic gearbox oil?
