Battery problem

Postby shropslad » Mon Oct 22, 2007 6:04 pm

I replaced our Maganes battery with a new one about 2 months ago,, the old one would go flat between Friday & Monday.
Now the new one did the same this last weekend. Parked it on the drive Friday night, battery as flat as a witches T*t this morning.
Car started fine with jump leads & seems fine over night.

Any ideas? interior lights switch off OK so not that. Red light isn't glowing or even dim while driving, so presume alternator is OK.

Glad of any help or ideas at all.

Thanks all
Mark

Flat Battery

Postby 8ightball » Mon Oct 22, 2007 6:29 pm

I bought my Megane on 10/10/07. When I took it out on the test drive it the battery was dead and wouldn't start and had to be jump started. The salesman said not to worry as they would fit a new battery which they did. First week it was fine then on Friday evening (I hadn't driven it since the day before) I got a bag out the boot. I clicked on the side button on the remote key to open the boot and all hell broke loose. The lights flashed on and off the door locks began clicking rapidly the windscreen wipers started flicking slowly back and forth. The red imobiliser red was flashing on and off very rapidly. I couldn't start the car or lock it. The battery drained very rapidly. For the next few days if I left the car for any length of time the battery would be flat and had to jump start it with a booster. I took the car back to the garage this morning and they couldn't find anything wrong with the car or the battery. They replaced the battery just to be on the safe side and the car seems ok at the moment. However, when I lock the car I can hear a very low whining sound coming from the boot. I have to click the boot open then closed again and it goes away. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem. It may be related the the one you're having. Is it something to do with the imobiliser thats causing the battery to drain overnight?

Gosh 8ightball that all sounds really scary and not something I relish happening to my car on a cold, wet winter night. I hope you don't get a repeat. PS What model have you got and what age?

Shropslad:

Have you checked to see if the boot light is permenantly lit? Some owners have reported issues with the boot light switch.

8ightball:

The noise you can hear is probably your alarm as it's in the boot somewhere? It usually makes a high pitched noise if a door is left open, check to see if all the doors, boot and bonnet switches are working
Make improvements, not excuses!

Car started fine, & running great. What we have started doing is locking the car with just one push on the button not 2 pushes, the second push on the button dead locks & immobelises the car i think?

Will check all door & boot switches.

thanks

the alam should be behind the nearside rear carpet/trim panel in the boot.(under the boot lamp)

Dead Battery

Postby 8ightball » Thu Oct 25, 2007 8:32 pm

Checked boot light did go off when locking car. Have had no more problems with battery. Have noticed that if I click the fob from the rear only the boot opens and I have to go to the front and click it again to open the front door. No repetition with the alarm going off it may be the immobilisor was confused (or I was) with the pattern of doors/boot openings shuttings. Seems ok now touch-wood!
