buying a new key card

Postby timbo* » Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:43 pm

Dropped one of my keycards recently and it is refusing to work at any time. Here are the facts:

- the key does lock and open the doors
- the the battery is fine - checked and changed and rechecked
- the card, when in the slot refuses to start the car - in fact the slot doesnt even recognise that the card is there

Im using the spare for now and have put off going to the dealer to ask for a new card...

anyone know how much £££ this is likely to be and is it covered on warranty?

I have a 3 dr Meg 1.4 dynamiqie.

Cheers

as your car is still in warranty.. play the innocent card and go into a dealer and say that the card isn't working anymore.. and you've changed the battery already.

Yep good idea, but you will also need to take your V5 registration document with you before they will order you a new one. Security issues with rogue mechanics has brought about this measure by Renault.

I have a feeling that the cards only come with a 2 year warranty :?:
I could be wrong though :?

i had to pay £170 upfront on ordering - as said need the V5 doc.
Then took 2 weeks to arrive, they then needed the car for just 1hr to program it.

had to buy one for mine, cost £75 from ren manchester, ordered on a tues and it was there on sat morn which was a surprise.only paid for the card at time of ordering. ren would have charged me £85 to program it,but there are a few car key specialists who can do it also,so make a few enquires before you commit to paying ren to do it. i did and saved £30.
if you are around manchester, let me know,i`ll give you the no. of the guy who did mine.

Hi, I have an 03 (52) 1.9 dci.
Both keys are showing the message: card not detected. Both keys lock and unlock the car.
I'm fearing that I'll need to replace both keys- anyone know of a company in the Reading Brekshire area who could program them?

thanks!

Try changing the batteries in them first!
CR 2025 lithium cells.

I hear what you're saying, but....would the doors not lock un/lock if the batteries are dead?
I thought (read?!) that the immobilizer/key in slot recognition is another part of the key?

are the keys `handsfree`? if so, do they work when in the slot?
the lock/unlock + immob systems are independent circuits (ie. if the battery is flat, you can open the car using the emergency key + start the car with the key in the slot)

sorry, can`t help with key specialist near you,but can you not find anyone on t`internet?

Not sure what the handsfree is, it's a 52 plate and I think that's an option on later models?
I can open the car using the card, i.e. not having to use the 'manual'/emergency key within the card. that's the point. the car will not start with the key (card) in the slot. the message that comes up is that the card is not recognised. I will try and replace one of the batteries as per IainMW's previous post. but as you say, the lock and immobiliser are different circuits so I am not hopeful on this working.

any other thoughts owners? thank you.

if it`s handsfree, there will be a button on each door handle, and it would unlock as you put your hands around the handle.(even if the card is in your pocket)
sounds like it could be a card reader problem,as it would be highly coincedental for both keys to pack up at the same time.

sorry i can`t help more, but my prob was just that the locking/unlocking + handsfree starting packed in,but a least i could still use the slot to start it.

sure someone will have more info for you.

thanks for your help. correct, mine is not handsfree, that sounds like far too much technology to go wrong... :)

actually the spare key had not been working for a while... :( so they've reached the point fo not working correctly, independently of one another.
this may influence your call on the card reader.

I just tried fresh batteries- unfortunately this had no impact at all.
the car will be on the truck tomorrow enroute to garage for diagnostics..

I think I will be a couple of hundred ££'s lighter by the end of the week.

thanks all for your input. I read with amusement the thread about how long owners held on to their migraine's before getting rid. i had a pug 306 previously and it was typically french, good basic mechanicals but bits falling off.

the migraine is different league in comparison in the unreliability stakes :(
