Whining noise from accelerator when at high speeds

Postby funkythumbs42 » Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:10 am

I have a 1.4 megane and when im doing 60mph+ if i take my foot off the accelrator i get a whining\whistling noise from it, this dissapears when i press down on the accelarator again. Any ideas what this could be?

Also when chaging lower gears (1st and 2nd) as i let go of the clutch to go into gear i sometimes get like crashing sounds, like to cymbals being hit together....this only happens and low speeds in lower gears, no idea why?

Hope you guys can help.

Greg

I get a tappet rattle from mine. You notice it when changing gear and more so when decellerating, especially going down from 3,100 to 3,000 rpm. This is a sort of fizzing/fluttering noise. I have taken a Renault tech out for a spin and he was reluctant to do anything about it until it affects performance and fuel consumption. I have read other threads about rattles from the 1.4 engine so there may be an oil pressure issue with some of these vehicles. I expect once my warranty runs out, the Renault dealer will be only too keen to get in there with their spanners.
Not sure about the noise you get when changing low gears.

Re: Whining / whistling noise:

Are you sure that the noise isn't from the gearbox? Sounds very much like a gearbox or clutch release bearing problem to me. If still uder warranty get it back to the dealers.

It sounds to me like its a gearbox whine you can hear. Silly question is does it do it in every gear or only one?

I also have this on my 1.4. I bought the car with 6000miles on the clock and it has always `whirred` when lifting off the accelerator or changing gear at higher revs. I am positive this noise is coming from the engine, as it does it when in neutral also. It could possibly be something around the engine resonating at certain revs, if the the engine moves on its mountings when lifting off. Only guessing. Would also like to know the cause of this.

My 1.4 does this too its an 08 plate, sounds like a sort of hissing a bit like induction noise did anyone find out the cause.

I forgot to mention in my previous comment that my tappet rattle also happens when you rev in neutral. I have also had people ask if my car is a diesel when they hear it idling, that tells you how bad the tappet rattle is.

mine does it too- esp in lower gears if you let off the throttle, kind of a high pitched tappety sound, not annoying now im used to it.

i think with so many 1.4 owners experiencing it, its just a trait of this engine, so not anything to worry about- the noise on mine has been there since i got it at 18k miles and still there now at 38k, no worse, no impact!!

My cars going into the Renault dealers on the 28th so i'll let you know what they say, a mechanic from the toyota dealers where i bought the car from, had a listen said could be gearbox or more likely clutch bearing.

Hi all, my cars been to the Renault dealers who have assured my local Toyota dealer (where car purchased) that the noise is typically "meganish", the Toyota dealer has been great and two of their mechanics went out in the car with the renault mechanic to check and were told the noise is normal, so it seems the noise is a characteristic of the 1.4 engine which could explain why no one has come up with a cause or a possible fix. 8-)
