Ignition Coils

Postby Jonno59 » Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:16 pm

Had 2 coils go me in a 6 week period, warranty is about to run out so how easy/hard is it to change these damn things, and where apart from Renault parts can I buy these. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Jonno

Firstly, welcome to the club! :D

Ignition coils are really easy to replace - one bolt and an electrical connector - simple job. Right on top of the engine so easy to get at too!

A good source of coils is Ebay, try to go for the Beru ones (not Sagem) they are better (apparently).

There is also a batch number you should try to avoid - it's posted somewhere on here but I'm not exactly sure of where.

I am sure someone with this knowlege will be along soon to enlighten you on this.

Again - welcome, hope you find the club useful.

I think you can get them from most motor factors these days.

certainly GSF do Beru pencil coils

AA replaced one of mine under warranty. Two more went outside of warranty, and the AA charged me - however, the AA told me that the first call-out should have replaced all four as there were a known batch of faulty ones; he told me to claim of Renault, which I did.

Renault sent me a cheque for £85.

glad u got the problem sorted :)

is there a way that you can find out what batch of coils you have and whether they are faulty? as I suspect coil problems on mine and notice that i have the same yr car as you also?

Are you thinking of the technical note 4242A? which I saw referenced somewhere on the site but I found here as well:

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxyZW5hdWx0c2Nlbmljcng0fGd4OjY0NzYzYmFiZGQ0NWY3NGM&pli=1

Says:

Fabrication date above 112 - 0 (e.g.: 050 - 1): Replace the faulty ignition coil(s)

Fabrication date below 112 - 0 (e.g.: 050 - 0): Replace all four ignition coils

Seems like everything up to 112 - 0 was dodgy.
