Warning light
My wife was driving home tonight when the "engine" light illuminated and stayed on. Looking through the manual it is apparently the "toxic fume filter system warning light" also the service light has come on as well even though it had a service 6 weeks ago. The car is a 1.6, any ideas much appreciated

Hi
Toxic fume warning light normally points towards bad coils - ie rough running, misfire on one or more cylinders.
I think at least one coil has given up the ghost! Get a diagnostic check carried out or if you have no warranty - replace your coils with a decent set from Ebay. Easy to find and really inexpensive!
Regards

Hi Rob,
my wife dug out the paperwork on the car and found we were still covered be renault assist, so we called the AA and the diagnostics pulled up fault p0340 camshaft sensor fault, so he extinguished the lights and we'll get it booked in to a Renault dealer under warranty (but not Lookers Renault Chester as imho are crap).

Hi John
Yes - the AA always carry these coils, I think they have to because of the sheer numbers of Renault vehicles that were fitted with them!
You probably know that the crappy Sagem coils have now been outclassed by the improved Beru ones, much more reliable it seems!
I for one will be carrying a spare set in the boot when my warranty is up next July - they are dead easy to fit and now quite reasonable price wise.
Regards

Hello again!
Hope it all goes smoothly from now on, as for a Yaris, (ok it's a Toyota so reliability is standard!)
But has it got any charisma compared to the Megane?
How you would judge this is not down to me, it's a matter of personal prefference but I would go for the Megane - no contest.
PS - I've owned two Toyotas in the past - both reliable and cheap to look after. But a little boring!!!
Hope she makes the right decision.
Regards

Hi Rob,
yes, I do agree, but it's such a shame that the build/engineering quality of the Megane wasn't on parr with the design features of the car. Basically she needs a reliable mode of transport for work allied to decent boot space for shopping/B&Q runs. I think I'm suffering from a mid-life crisis! I've gone and bought a 99' Lotus Elise, geat fun but not without its own faults i.e Rover K-series engine with there cooling/head gasket issues, but up to now its been o.k (touch wood).

Getting the AA guy to reset the warning light was probably the reason they didnt change it. The manager at my local dealer (hes already on my xmas card list) tells me they are not allowed to carryout any replacements under waranty if the fault is not evident on the vehicle at the time of inspection.
