Hello everyone I'm new here.
I recently bought a 2006 Megane 1.6 16v.
It drives lovely everything ok there. However there is a wheel bearing noise but not sure which one. I think it could he the front.
In any event that's straight forward. My question is that when the car is at idle in neutral quiet everything fine.
Depress the clutch everything fine.
Select gear and drive car drives fine however there is a rough grating type noise as your driving whilst driving I depressed the clutch and it instantly goes away.
I'm thinking release bearing ?
Or could be related to a front bearing but in my mind unlikely
Anyone any thoughts or experience like this before spending out money on a clutch kit and labour as clutch itself is fine and pulling fine

Re: Megane mk2 noise
Hi,
l think you need a mechanic to drive this.
Usually, the thrust is worse when you put foot down.
lf all is quiet when in neutral and rolling, not wheel bearing.
lt could be actual gearbox/final drive.
lt's not one to be guessed at.
lf you're in the AA call them say you're worried about noise and breakdown, to get opinion.
Good luck
Bob.

Hi Peter,
get someone to listen to this in case it could possibly be the dual mass flywheel, l don't know what they sound like.
Good luck

Re: Megane mk2 noise
Fairly sure the 1.6 has a solid flywheel. If the clutch was breaking up it should be noisy with the engine revved in neutral?. Since it's not slipping and the gears engage okay it sounds fine. Are the engine mounts okay maybe the engine is touching the body?
Could be the VVT dephaser pulley a weak spot on the 1.6vvt they rattle when worn.
From there think I would check the gear oil level and then drain and check for swarf from a damaged bearing. I usually chock the wheels and jack each front wheel up and try to replicate the noise in the workshop. Might give you a clue which side it's coming from but I doubt it's a wheel bearing or driveshaft.

Re: Megane mk2 noise
Hi there many thanks for your thoughts.
Not had time to get it in yet but it's kinda like a grating noise but only when driving in gear. Yes years ok pulls lovely clutch feels fine.
It kind kinda come and go a little when driving when it's so
Pressing the accelator and coming off it again a little. So possibly the pully
But when stationary in neutral no noise at all or when revving. Once I crack this one I'l report back just so as it may be of use to others

Hi,
please do report when you find it.
Wondered if you'd checked the bottom engine mount for movement etc, that would be the best scenario l reckon.
l think the pulley would be all the time.
Good luck

Differental problem which means replacement of gearbox 100%
