Handbrake Light

Postby Dreamcatcher » Fri Oct 29, 2010 6:28 pm

Bought my Megane II today and just got home, When I lock the car the handbrake warning light stays on along with the car layout diagram thingy!!, Worried this will be draining my battery so anybody got an idea on what I need to do.
The garage I got the car from is not open till Monday so if there's a solution to get me through till then I'd be really gratefull

Meant to add
It's a 52 plate, 1.6 Megane ii diamonique :conf

Stressed like mad as we've used all our cash and woried were going to be hit with a huge bill :sad

Try removing the central section of trim which encapsulates the handbrake assembly (see my sticky post on replacing the throttle style handbrake). There is a green wire with a spade connector on that activates the warning lamp. It may have become disconnected. Failing that, disconnect the battery -VE terminal when the car is not in use. Not ideal, and not probably necessary. Most (if not all) the accessories turn off automatically after 20 minutes with the exception of the alarm. Are the lamps still on after half an hour following locking?

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

Thanks for the reply :-)

Moved the car to a flat surface a took the handbrake off but the bit that looks like a car and the info bit above it are still lit, been out this morning and they have been illuminated all night. Car started no probs so not sure how much they are draining the battery but If I'd like to sort it.
Love the car and great fun to drive just got this problem with these staying on but because I keep being told of the electic faults on Magane's I feel more wound up than I proberly should be

It is a network problem. The ECU does not go to sleep when it should. It is easy to diagnose according to the manual, but then you'll have to find a mechanic who reads manuals...

Does the car have the undertray, the front wheel liners and the hatch cover in the port liner intact? The UCH computer may become damaged by spray if the liner or the hatch cover are missing.

The mechanic you spoke to should have checked your UCH instead of winging about Renaults.

There is a microswitch inside the area below the armrest/storage box that the handbrake lever activates. At the rear of the armrest/storage box where it meets the floor there are T20 (I think) screws that attach the armrest/storage box to the car. Remove these and you should becable to lift the armrest/storage box enough to access the microswitch and wiring.
