Replacement of fusebox connector pin recepticle

Postby wh666 » Mon Oct 05, 2015 6:51 pm

A bit tricky to explain, so I'll try to upload a photo. I tried searching before posting but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Basically, my megane has had a water ingress issue in the fuse box. Removed the fusebox, stripped it down, cleaned, etc. Then I've started to do the connectors on the car wiring.

On the PPH2 brown connector, one of the female pin receptors has rusted away completely. Has anyone replaced one of the individual female pin connectors before and can give me any tips for replacement? Can I buy the female connector in any electronic shop and if so, what size exactly am I buying? Note, that I do not wish to replace the entire plastic connector, just the rusty female connectors in the block.

Try a scrap yard and find the same connector and solder a pin out of that in place other rusted one
Drive it like you stole it

A little bit of fiddling with a jeweller's screwdriver and these will pull out. As Freelander said, get one from a scrappy, any model will do. Scrappies are full of our cars now!
Incidentally you described this as the fusebox. I don't want to split hairs but the fusebox is inside the glove box. You are working on the "switching and protection unit" referred to as UCP by Monsewer Renault (Unite de Controle de Protection - cue french accent here!). You might need to remove this unit from the car to check for further water damage. It is quite easy to get out although access to some of the plugs at the back is fiddly. You will need to check the circuit board itself for damage and this can be removed from the UCP casing by releasing the little plastic clips (some might break). To complicate the terminology, the exterior multiplex unit is on a small vertical PCB at the back of the main board, covered by a small ventilated housing. Fun working on Meganes, is it not?

Hello again. I visited my local scrappy today to buy a UCP. I had a choice of several Megs, all looking in good condition but they just do not go! I made sure to cut the wires leaving the plugs on the unit so I can post the brown one to you if you wish. Always happy to help a fellow sufferer! Send me a PM giving your address.
Cheers, Mike

Thanks guys.

After trying to find the pin replacements and failing, I finally managed to find a local scrappers with a megane in, so I got the connector and wired it up. Reassembled everything and more problems than before. Now when connecting the battery, radiator fan is constant and when starting, wipers still don't work and then starts almost misfiring!

I did remove the switching unit completely before, scrubbed it down with wd40 and cleaned it off with isopropenol cleaner rather than water which some videos suggest. All looks clean and in good condition after removing corrosion from the pins in the plug sockets.

Now Im waiting for a local auto electrician, see if he can get it running again so I can get it mot'd and sold.

Strange that you should say that. While messing with my S&P unit (UCP) yesterday with igition on, I removed fuse 5D (supplies DCU, PAS etc) the cooling fans roared into life. When I re-inserted the fuse, the fans stopped. When I removed the DCU plugs, the fans started up again! What a nightmare! I did make another discovery which might help you. See my next post on the Forum.
Do let us know how you get on with your auto electrician. I thought my own problems rested with the UCP but when I replace it, the problems remained. What with the multiplexing, the wiring is extremely complicated.

The wiring Renault use is very clever in places..

Take the simple seat belt warning light and buzzer, you cant just clip the wire to stop it as it has a simple fail safe to make sure an open circuit still leaves the buzzer on. the only way to defeat it is to bridge the switch contacts with a bit of tin foil ...

OR

the key card and pedal switch system... you actually have to remove a fuse to defeat that which goes against logic...

Yea I'll keep everyone updated, hopefully it might help someone googling it in the future. The auto electrician I use is good but he's struggling to get out to me due to workload which is frustrating.

Last year the culprit was the body control module, no idea how to get to the though! The switching unit needed addressing anyway as it was dripping wet.
