'54 1.9 dCi Megane Sluggish and noisy

Postby vanko25 » Mon Mar 02, 2015 2:28 pm

Hi there!

I have been registered on the forum for few months now trying to find a solution for my issues with the F9Q 800 but without any success. So I have decided to open a new tread.

I have bought the car in Nov 2014 with 140k on the clock. First thing to do was to give it an oil and filter(Fuchs TITAN GT1 PRO from Kwikfit) as it was showing Oil level too low. When drove it for the first few days it was fine and was pulling as it should. Then one morning on my morning commute to work it started running rough and whining at 1800-1900 rpm. Then followed the EGR cleaning thread and cleaned it (was full of soot). This didn't change the sound just got the car running sluggish and increased MPG.

Since then have changed the MAF,Fuel filter(Bosch),Oil and filter(ELF and Renault OEM filter) and nothing changed.

Then I left it with a Renault specialist he had a test drive with CLiP connected and said that there is nothing wrong with it except Camshaft sensor fault appeared for few seconds and the Turbo boost was a bit less than normal

Yesterday I have "blanked off" the EGR by rotating it with 180 degrees and found out that it was quite oily. The pipe from the intercooler and the intercooler were a bit oily too.

My father the says that by the sound of the engine at idle it running on 3 cilynders. After that it has been treated with Comma magic and it looked to be a bit quiet at idle.

What could make it runnig rough and sluggish? Probably the oil in the EGR, intercooler and pipework screams Turbo?!

Will appreciate everyone's opinion on the problem!

Your engine sounds fairly similar to my 1.9dci (2004, 116k) - a little rough and most definitely a diesel! Turbo whine is pretty similar to mine too i.e. whines a little at around 1800 but doesn't get any louder. My can be a little rough when idling after a long run but isn't misfiring. I suspect the EGR valve is misbehaving even though it's cleaned regularly.

With mine the refurb turbo appears to leaks a little oil, some of which ends up in the intercooler and associated pipe work. My EGR valve is never oily however - just gets sooty. The only time it did get oily was when the original turbo failed and most of the oil went down the exhaust pipe. If you are able to I suggest checking the turbo shaft for excessive play.

You should also check all the engine breather pipes, especially from the oil filler bottle to the engine.

Is it a 5w30 oil? What oil filter are you using? It is a bit worrying as well to read about the oil being too low, as it can be an indicator of an earlier failure.

One sound is what sounds like the exhaust blowing. It sounds like a leak at the manifold so look for signs of soot and when running smoke from the joins.
The whine sounds like the water pump or something around that area. Hard to tell from a video.

Thanks for the answers guys!

Taffyhl, the EGR was rotated by 180 degrees(blanked) so I got it out of the equation. :conf

AlexB, when I got the car it showed engine oil too low(the car stood on the drive for few months). So the first placed I have visited was Kwik fit. They've put Titan GT1 5W40. And all the problems stated in the initial post started on the morning after. Then I have bought Elf Evolution SXR 5w40 and Genuine Renault Oil filter and did the oil change myself the prior weekend using Wynn's oil flush before changing it. The whole engine is oily so I suppose it is losing oil from somewhere. The place where the engine and the gearbox are joining is a bit oily as well, probably crankshaft seal? I am topping up every 1000 miles or so (doing 50 miles every day).

Stu001 That was the first thing I have checked. Exhaust manifold blowing but was not able to find out any cracks. The whine could be from the alternator free wheel too. But do not have the spare time to check it all over.

I have bought new Valeo intercooler as it looks pretty bad and will post updates when I change it on the weekend. Thanks in advance, guys! I appreciate your help!

Have changed the inter cooler with original Hella one last weekend because it was leaking. It got a bit better but the rough sound is still there. It seems to be a injection system to me, although when got it scanned with clip the guy said the car is fine.
