Your mileage meter might be also incrementing every time you stop the engine... Similar faults were reported before - a fuse is blown somewhere or a wire disconnected. It is the same circuit that stays live and keeps the radio code intact when ignition is off. Never had this problem, so I can't tell you which exactly fuse to check. They are all listed in the workshop manual in the sticky thread with manuals, above this one.

I've had sort of a similar issue with the fuel gauge, it was showing different everytime I started the car, also the range was scrambled. My problem sorted itself out when I replaced the battery which was 6 years old and was well overdue.

I had this exact problem. The problem was caused by a corroded fuse in the passenger compartment fuse box. The fuse your looking for is a Blue 15A and it is the one that shows a little picture of a radio. That had corroded in my one and it gave the exact symptoms you described. In your case your fuse could have blown. So hopefully that should help.
