I recently done a bit of work to car removing aircon pump and bits and i put it back together started fine running good had it idling for about 15mins then realised i was on empty so turned it off.
Tried starting it and it turns over but dont fire up thats when i noticed some air in fuel line. Put a jerry can of diesel in and primed it until all air was gone. Took at 10 trys but finally started.
Got half a mile up road and it stalled. i assumed it was low fuel still even though light wasnt on. Put another jerry can of diesel in so it was on 1/4 tank now. Primed it until all air gone and still didnt start after 10 trys.
While priming it the first time i did notice some black bits in fuel line so i took diesel filter (was changed last year/6k miles ago) off noticed some sludge in bottom of it cleaned it all out put it back together.
I disconnected the fuel pipe that goes into diesel pump faced it into jerry can and primed it until diesel filter filled up and all air was out of system the reconnected to diesel pump.
Started first time had it running for 10mins drove back home turned it off left it 5mins then tried to start it and failed. Primed it again making sure no air tried starting it and failed again and next 5 times.
Went indoors for 15mins to think of what else it could be and when i returned to car i noticed air bubbles in fuel lines again.
At first i thought it might be a bit of dirt in injectors or failed diesel pump but once started it runs fine no problems until i turn it off then it dont start again.
Could my issue of it not starting but down to an air leak somewhere?

Re: Air in fuel lines
I would definitely say so. I have air in my fuel lines but not as bad as you. I have to leave my car overnight for it to have trouble starting but it always starts.
I would suggest you firstly fit a quality filter, I did and it did help a little. My car would hunt for fuel and you could feel the vibration of this but after fitting a bosch filter that problem has gone.
If you still get the problems retrace the work that you have done. Did you have to move the fuel lines at any point, if so did you bend them. If yes then it could be that you need new plastic fuel lines. I think this is where my problem lies.
Also never let your car go below 1/4 tank, was told this is no good for a diesel.
Top tip to check first is that at the bottom of your fuel filter is a water drain screw. Drain out the water then tighten this screw nice and tight by hand. hopefully this is the culprit, if so its a easy fix to a real pain of a thing. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Air in fuel lines
I didnt touch anything fuel related. Im not sure if it is air related now as it started fine with air in the lines.
I think it could be hot start problem as when it start it works fine on off 5 times in row no problem but after a long drive it dont start again until next day.
While engine bay was stripped down i did give it a good degrease and through a few buckets of water on it so maybe ive disturbed a sensor or something.
Just been robbed for £20 at renault for a decent fuel filter probably not needed but it can only help.

Buckets of water and engine bays don't normally make for good reading mmmmmmm
I bet that's the problem
