Megane CC 1.6 2008 - "Engine Whine"

I have a Megane CC 1.6 2008 and the engine seems to whine all the time. Obviously its most noticeable when pulling away or even sitting still if you rev the engine.

Any idea if these engines just do that or is there an underlying problem?

Are you sure it's the engine? Could it be the clutch thrust bearing?

Try it with headlamps, fog lamps, rear demist and air conditioning all turned on at once, and then again with them all turned off. Does that make any difference? My guess is that it could be a bearing somewhere related to the engine drive belt. Mine certainly whines slightly when the air conditioning is on.
